28-2 rescued Update and story in post #34
A friend of mine sent me photos of this gun which belonged to his wife's granny.
Apparently back in the day Granny came out of the house waving it at a few police officers...not sure of the rest of the story though.
Not sure where it had been stored after Granny passed.
He wanted to know if I could make it look better...I told him I could make it look better but far from "perfect".
I soaked it in 50/50 mixture of acetone & ATF for over a week before tearing it completely apart.

After photos
Came out "ok".
Everything functions fine.
Threw on a set of target stocks.
Had to replace the rear sight blade as well.
Polished up a few older .357 rounds.
Gave it to my buddy yesterday and he plans on giving to his wife in a glass case at Christmas.

That came out real nice considering the condition that it was in. It would make a perfect 'truck gun'. Pity it's going in a glass case, I'd shoot the heck out of it. We'll done!

Great job!
I brought a mistreated and rusted model 36 back from the dead.
It feels good to rescue something that others would probably throw in the metal scrap bin.

Great job! My biggest issue with a project like this would be getting the gun reassembled without having a couple of parts left over. Always wanted to take an old junker down and see if I could get it back together.

This gives me great hope for a project 10-7 I acquired off a guy a few months ago. What was the process after disassembly? I’m intrigued by the prospect of the rust removal process....
Great job

Thanks
Thanks for the comments!!
I'll try to get the rest of the Granny story...something about the police coming to the house (1983) in Arizona investigating possible illegal immigrants
Once I pulled it out of the solution I went over all of the surfaces with bronze wool.
Then placed in mineral spirts to clean off solution etc.
Brought it in and removed the side plate and removed the innards.
Went over the trigger & hammer with a fine stone.
Final thing was use Flitz on surfaces and then reassemble.

Interesting mixture
Tell us more about acetone and ATF. Is that standard procedure for bad rust like that ?

50/50 solution of ATF and acetone is a great solution for soaking loose rust. Just have to be patient and let it soak for a week or so, and be sure its sealed tight. The acetone will evaporate quickly if its not sealed. Bronze wool will protect the finish better than steel wool after the soaking, and the rest of it is "elbow grease" and time.

Hey it is a 28 not a 27, it looks just like it is supposed to, a working gun. Nice save and glad it is staying in family".

Nicely done on cleaning it up for a friend. I too would rather see it shot but maybe someday but this allows them to look at it and remember the grandma. I would also like to hear the rest of the story, just to steal a phrase.

Nice job! That's the kind of 27 or 28-2 I'm looking for that's mechanically ok, but looks bad and I can feel great about sending to a refinisher and have it electroless nickeled, or NP3'd, etc.

update with photo & story
Gun was presented in the case along with the story to my buddy's BIL on Christmas night.
He was very grateful and shed a few tears.
