Default Please, help with a S&W model 65 ID

Hello gentlemen. I am new to the forum and would like, if possible, the approximate date of manufacture of an S&W I own, inherited from my uncle. He was an army officer here in Brazil and bought this gun in the USA on one of the trips he took a long time ago. This must be the most routine question that should appear here, but we all have that kind of curiosity. Thanks in advance.

Revolver features:

- Model 65-1
- Barrel 4 "
- .357 magnum
- Serial number 1D 14064
- Recessed cylinder
- Strain screw
- 3 screw side plate

You're our second Brazilian member. One is in Rio and a frequent contributor.

Stay out of the ocean down there, especially around Recife. We don't want any members to be eaten by sharks, ha!

Your English is perfect, better than some US members who have spelling difficulties.

Welcome! Its full name is .357 Magnum Military & Police, a popular law enforcement sidearm here from the mid-1970s until the advent of 9 mm pistols in the late ‘80s to early ‘90s. Still an effective gun and fun to shoot, at least with lighter loads.

Ztowr

Welcome to the S&W Forum.

Here is some additional information about the Model 65-1 for you.

The Model 65-1 was the first version of the Model 65, introduced in 1972. It was a new model line, based on a special order by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol for the Model 64-1 upgraded to chamber the .357 Magnum cartridge in 1972. Later that year, the designation was changed to Model 65-1. The -1 variant was replaced by the 65-3, in 1977. As Chad mentioned, your example comes from the 1976-77 period.

I thought Brazilian law limits even most cops to only .38 Special power.

Do you hold this .357 under a collectors license? Just curious about what' s allowed.

Yes, welcome to the Forum. That's a nice gun from the pictures. Do you have any showing the whole gun so I can be jealous?!

So, there was never a "no dash" or a dash-2 for the M65?

Also, it seems to be sporting a trigger shoe.

Never a "no dash" - this was also the case with the .357 M&P carbon steel revolver, the Model 13-1.

The 65-2 designation was applied only to the units with a 2" tapered barrel. (For a somewhat parallel situation, consider the Model 36-1.)

By coincidence I rescued this foundling on my pre-gunshow pawn shop crawl today...Pinned and recessed Model 65-1...Pics are prior to a good cleanup...I hope I didn't get hurt too bad at $600 out the door......Ben

Look at all the photos. The lighting/camera can sometimes play tricks, but it is stainless.

FWIW, the trigger shoe is generally a good idea on a revolver as it can cause an AD when holstered. If this is a gun you might carry, I'd remove that. Keep it for sentimental value if you wish, but remove it.
