Default Model 12-2 found a new home

Found this nice example late flat latch model 12-2 which dates to 1966. Must have been close to the change over on the latch date wise? Has original box with paper and a used cleaning kit, but does not look to have been fired much. Hope to find a nice pair of walnut SB grips for it! Oh yeah, it was $416. Why that amount? Because when asked what I would offer on it, that was the amount in my wallet.

Model 12-2 found a new home

Thanks for looking.

Very nice! I think the 12-2 has the thin frame, so you’ll either need to modify regular K frame stocks or begin the hunt for the elusive Model
12 ones.

Nice example, thx for sharing. You probably know this but no +P in that model, standard pressure only.

That’s a very good price on that Model 12. I recently picked up a VERY cosmetically challenged nickel 12-2 for $325. Ugly as sin but makes a good carry and shoots well.

For reference, D945499 shipped 11/1976.

Congratulations, that’s a nice find!

Seems to me like someone did a test here a few years back. Fired more than a thousand rounds of plus-pee in a Model 12. No measurable effect on the gun. No cracked frame. No stretched frame.

I carry +p in my Model 12. I actually fire maybe a dozen rounds of +p a year, just to verify shooting to point of aim. I do likewise with my Model 37. Of course if it is an aluminum cylinder, I wouldn’t fire even standard ammo. I have seen a few of those.

Nice model 12.
One of my favorite Smiths.
Got an undeserved bad rap....very under rated revolver.
Grips are few and far between but the do show on occasion.
Good luck.

That looks like a nice Model 12. My Model 12-2, which I bought because it was a ridiculously good deal, has become one of my favorites. It’s my go to off duty gun, and also my back up when I carry my 64-2 or 65-3 at work. I was shooting it just the other day, no problem hitting bowling pins at 25 yards with it. When I find another nice Model 12 I’ll gladly buy it to have a spare. What I’d really like to find is a 12-4, that version has the same frame thickness as the other K frames, so it uses standard K frame grips.

I keep some old 125 gr standard load JHP Nyclads in my 64 12-2. Why chance it?

Wish Federal would make another batch of those.

Here’s the +P/Model 12 thread mentioned above.

+P Through a Model 12: THE TEST...is done!!!!

Pretty interesting. It feeds into my suspicions that airweight frames are cracked at the factory during barrel installation, that most people never notice it, and that if it is noticed its is fixed with a Sharpie or touch-up pen before it is sold and goes on shooting with a new owner.

Has anyone seen a catastrophic failure due to a typical airweight frame crack?

I have a set of Mod 12 stocks if I can locate them. I can’t remember if they are round or square though.

Appreciate the look for them! Didn’t know when I bought this that the early Model 12 would use a different stock than the standard K frame.
