Default S&W 58 Grips

Picked up an "S" serial numbered Model 58 this weekend in OR using my C&R FFL. I have a NIB with all the extras 58 and wanted to keep it that way, so getting a lightly used (muzzle and cylinder front bluing wear) version means I have a nice shooter. May carry it while hiking or accompanying friends on their Black Bear hunts.

The gun came with large diamond service stocks, not the correct PC type. Serial number of S3134XX puts DOM in 1968 to 1969.

Did S&W make large diamond PC service stocks for the Model 58? Given that the gun serial numbers to 1968 - 69 and that's when S&W switched over to the non-diamond service grips would either type of PC grip be correct for this 58?

Am seeing $165.00 or so for the non diamond PC grips. If diamond PC grips are out there am guessing they're expensive as hell.

Yes, S&W made N frame diamond PC Magna stocks.

I can't tell you the cut-off point, but I sold these to a forum member a few years ago. It looks like the serial number is S256482.

Edit to add: I have in my notes that S&W discontinued diamonds on N frame Magna stocks around serial number S270,000. I got that info from Doc44, so I have every confidence it's accurate.

I believe the diamond PC grips were changed to non-diamond PC grips in 1968...

I think you are lucky and to be correct the post diamond style is correct for your 58. Mine arrived wearing the wrong stocks and I searched long and hard for the correct style then the ones I bought were too small and left the frame exposed. Had to search for and buy another set that fit better. First time I ever had S&W factory stocks not fit. Maybe someone sanded them down for some reason or perhaps they shrunk.

Here are a couple of pictures of my Model 58 with serial S260003 with matching number stocks. Hope this helps if that is what you decide to look for.

I'm not sure if it is allowed to write here references of sellers, but there is a fair guy on Facebook who has a lot of factory stocks every week. If I'm right about the rules, I cannot write his nickname .
Btw if you are in gun FB groups, probably you know who he is. The last two months he had 2 sets of PC magna N frame for m58, already gone

I appreciate the responses and information. The non-diamond PC service stocks aren't exactly cheap but they look to be sort of available. Already ordered a BK grip adapter.

I suppose selling off the current diamond service stocks would put a dent in the PC cost. Probably best to hang on to them as I'm likely to end up buying another Smith that could use them.

As an aside, I first thought "that's a bit much for an HB 13" and passed it by. Went back to it and realized it was a 58 at a good price. Kind of a challenge convincing the store owner it was C&R eligible, then that my C&R FFL was good even though I'm in CA.

Looking for nonexistent 9mm ammo turned out OK.

My M58, c.1965 came to me with standard flat-bottom Magnas.

It took quite awhile to find some correct decent PC diamond Magnas (without breaking the bank), and I was helped out by a member here.
Combined with the BK adapter that's on it, it all works great together. Mine is far from pristine - it sees woods carry, some EDC in colder weather, fun on the range and has been a hunter.

Well I found a set of PC grips on "that auction sight" - hurt me just a bit to pay so much for grips we used to toss in the $5.00 bin. The BK adapter is already here. An El Paso Model 88 pancake type holster will show up soon. I have an old Roys Holsters stashed around somewhere too.

We know how S&W was at using parts.
I have seen diamond magna grips over 300,000.
I actually have a set in that range.
