I have the opportunity at a 1979 Model 27-2. It is in above average condition without the box and papers. I wanted to check to see on round about value.

Understanding the times are a little different right now. I didnt want an opportunity to pass me by.

Blue finish with a 5" barrel.

I would check the different gunsites (Gunsinternational, Guns America, Gunbroker) to see what they are selling for; NOT what someone is asking. Prices are all over the map and quality older Smith and Wesson revolvers are fading away fast. If I had to have one in above average condition, as you describe, I would spend no more than $1200 tops. But it would have to be in good mechanical condition with no issues and not a lot of bluing wear. Good luck.

Anything under $800 is a "rip your pants getting your wallet out" price --- to $1200 being tops for me.

Welcome to the Forum from Virginia. Sounds like you may have a nice one on tap. The Model 27 is clearly one of the finest examples of "old-time" S&W craftsmanship and quality.

Some tips before you buy, check the serial number, if 1979 it should have a letter N prefix. Also recheck the barrel length measured correctly as the 5" bbl was discontinued in 1979. Check the type of front sight (Patridge, red insert ramp, pinned etc.). Check the type of stocks (Goncalo Alves targets became standard the following year (1980) IIRC.).

Check the frame underneath the stocks for factory rework stamps and dates that may indicate a refinish or barrel change, etc.

In high ORIGINAL condition (98%) but without any accessories (box, case, docs, tools) or documented provenance, I would say $1100 to $1200, but to me that would be an "out-the-door" price. If you are dealing with a local private sale then fine, but if you are on-line and have to pay buyers premium, shipping, FFL transfer fees, taxes, etc. then you'll need to adjust accordingly.

In have 3 Model 27 revolvers as shown below, a "Pre Model 27" with a S prefix serial number, 6-1/2" blue, shipped 10-16-1952, a 3-1/2" blue with presentation stocks that shipped 4-5-1977, and a 6" Nickel that shipped 5-8-1980.

If you can please post pictures, but do not post links to any active sale site, as that is a no-no on the Forum.

What's the asking price?

Model 27s began shipping in full target configuration in 1975, so your prospective purchase should have a target trigger, hammer and stocks. It would have shipped with a wood fitted case as well. Measure the barrel length from the face of the cylinder to the end of the barrel for true length.

I might be tempted to go above $1200 for a 5", but that might just be me.

From what I understand, the 5" barrel on a Model 27 is fairly rare, and IMO, seems to be the perfect length barrel on an N-frame. I have other N-frames in various lengths, and 5" seems to be the sweet spot.

Of course I may be biased, I have a 5" Model 27 sitting in a nice wooden presentation box on the top shelf of my safe!

I dont think you will be disappointed with a model 27, especially a pinned and recessed model. I myself have been hoping to "happen upon" one of them for a while now. The market is very volatile for guns as a whole, but these beautiful revolvers always commanded a premium. Best of luck and get it if you can.....Cheers

I have seen 3 auctions on Gunbroker.com for Mod27 -2 in 5” in last 3 weeks. Prices were 1,200 to 1,500.

Today a 5” barrel n frame is worth more. Even the 8 3/8” barrels were cheap at one time.

Does an inch shorter or longer really matter? A 4” or a 5” or a 6” either barrel is ok for me.
