Mod. 10-6 Year?
Won on GB, Serial # D791232
Is this pre- 1971 (= C&R) ?
( I know, I paid too much
- But I wanted it to shoot, and needed layaway.)
Thanks- RHytonen "(Rod"),

Looks like about the fall of 1975.
Nice model 10. You bought a C&R
a little early. Welcome Aboard.

Welcome from Virginia
Welcome to the Forum from Virginia. Very nice 1st post! You got the quintessential, iconic Model 10, probably the best selling S & W revolver ever made. Law Enforcement all over the world has relied on this 38 Special revolver for pushing 100 years (1899 to approx 1990's).
The Model number stamping began in 1957 and you have a dash 6 (6th Engineering change). C&R doesn't start until the firearm is 50 years old. You cannot ever pay too much for S&W guns that are not being made anymore...in good condition you can just "buy too early.
Around my family & friends everyone wants to shoot the "cop guns" whenever we get a range day, so we grab the Model 10-5 (blue 1972, nickel 1977, model 36 snubby 1967), several boxes of 38 Special ammo and off we go. Fun shooting for all ages.
Enjoy your first S&W!

Welcome from Western Massachusetts. Your first S&W is very nice; but, you should know now it will not be your last!

To be clear, if the 1975 date is correct and I assume it is, then your revolver is not C&R. But that really doesn't matter as it is a fine revolver.

Thanks much for your generous ($30 LOL) expertise
(and, though I was warned, I do appreciate your lightning response!)
This seemss like a real friendly community.
May I some day have more to offer than thanks!
Less than a week later, I also ordered (ok, bid & won on another GB layaway) a 19-6 Combat, from the same seller. Thought 'd try shooting .357 (being a 75 y.o. "new" gun owner/'collector' retired EE/musician, amateur gunsmith already up to my ears in old iron, mostly .22)
Cheers,
Rod

Thanks- but I already learned that painful?? lesson.
As I told serger, I also soon after, ordered a 19-6 Combat. Serial # BHL8709.(pic attached)
THAT one will take longer to pay for, but 'll amuse myself gaining at least some accuracy with the M10. IF I can find some .38s....
I figured out what attracts me to these.
My grandfather in SC had been a cop.
I'm sure he showed me some S&W revolvers.
BTW I grew up in Maynard MA (East, near Concord/Acton, played organ in surrounding churches, Fr. Horn in the local band, and some guitar -& horn- in boston) and went to UMass Amherst for a BSEE, then spent four years at Westover AFB (Chicopee, as you know) before moving to Boston, then 20 years in Manhattan, NYC (Music and Engineering). After that, DC (HQNASA), then VA, & retired here in WV, where it's cheap, and (incidentally) you can have, carry, and shoot guns with no permit. That didn't exactly discourage me from taking up this hobby!
The docs (bad back) won't let me race vintage karts any more, so I'm essentially slowly unloading my VK collection for a gun collection (it seems.)
Now the wife hates me for saving all the trash for free plinking targets....
My son-in-law calls the guns my "muskets."(a dig on my disdain for what I derisively call the "Plastic 9" popular today.)
If only I could AFFORD an antique Turkish "Blunderbuss" musket...or those cool super-ornate, steampunk-looking antique French Pinfire revolvers... Not on S.S. I'm afraid...
Regards to W. Mass!

If collecting is going to become a new hobby, spend another $35 and get the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson, 4th edition. It has all the previously and currently manufactured S&W firearms. what to look for, what years such-and-such was made or stopped, serial numbers according to date manufactured, "dash" numbers and what they signify, and some really nice pictures, too. You can order it from Amazon.

Hi h.t.- and thanks!
As far as collecting goes, I find so far my tastes are so eclectic (and budget so limited) that, to get many more S&W's isn't likely.
I already have (or am awaiting layaway completion on) three - the two revolvers, and a Model 41 .22 Match Pistol.
But of course after shooting them, who knows?
Regards,
Rod

Model 10-5
I have a model 10-5 with US stamped on the back strap of the grip. How can I find out if this was a war gun? Or why was it stamped?

First post, welcome!
If you can’t find any info on your stamped model 10 by searching here, you probably ought to start a new thread.
A clear picture would be a must.
