Default I found a S&W mod.12-2

I found a S&W mod.12-2 at a local pawn shop for 500 OTD...was about 80% no box or papers...I checked the frame marked 12-2 steel cyl. blue finish. Checked the frame at the bottom of the square pistol grip and the trigger guard with a magnet it sticks... I thought this gun was a alloy frame....what gives? hvymech

The magnet may be reacting to the strain screw or grip pin.

Yes, I thought the Model 12s were an alloy frame too. You could weigh it and see how it compares to the factory specs.

A model 12 does have an alloy frame and steel barrel and cylinder. Look very careful for hairline cracks under barrel in the yoke area. I believe the asking price is pretty high and we know pawn shops try to make 50% profit on guns... Why your magnet is attracted the the alloy could mean it has enough mixture of attractant metal.

I think 500 OTD is pretty darn reasonable today for a 80% model 12. I wouldn’t have left without it.

For what’s it worth, I picked up this 12-2 last month in a local pawn shop for $325 OTD.

The nickel was in very bad shape, but it’s sound mechanically, the grips match, and it’s a good shooter.

I’m no good with percentages, do your own math based on what they want for your 80%, in my opinion $500 is a little high based on your description.

Hey , you can have mine for a lot less shipped. 1972, M12-2, works like a champ! A few minor finish issues that can be buffed out

BTW, the grips match

Mods, this is a joke. I am not selling in the wrong forum

I have a Mod 16 that was worse corroded than that and I found a company that fixed it. PM me if you want to know who and where.

My opinion is $500 is in the range of reasonable, depending on the barrel length. During COVID I haven’t seen many comparable two inchers selling for much less on Gun Broker.

The Model 12 is a super carry gun. An imperfect finish makes it just that much easier to carry without concern.
