Kenny-Every gun you have is a “keeper”. I’ve enjoyed my 58. I’ve had three different grip sets on her. At this time she has some PC magna’s. Enjoy. Merry Christmas!

Thanks Jim. I sold a lot of my guns this past year and just kept my keepers.
Our numbers are pretty close.
Merry Christmas to you too.

My SFPD 58 is my favorite revolver, and yours is an absolute beaut! I love the poster too. Funny how the "city load" .41's of the '60's are now the cowboy loads of the '20's!

I have 4" N-frames in 357 , 41 magnum , 44 magnum and 45 Colt . They get the most work out , esp the 58 . I equipped it with a set of PC Magna's . I practice with it every chance I get using my hand loads from mild to wild . I practice shooting strong side and weak side a lot . I have a left handed shoulder holster rig for just it . The last time I wore it while in town , a guy came up to me and asked me if I was a " Texas Ranger " ? I took it as a great compliment , even though I had to tell him " no " . Regards Paul

The great thing about the 58 is that it is an easier carry gun than the heavier barreled N-frames. I really like them all, but the 58 carries best.

You can't do much better for a "my only 4 inch barrel N-Frame"... that's the best looking M58 I've ever seen.

I had two other 4" N frames, both were .357s.
The top one was my 1957 4" pre-27 and the second was my 520.
I sold both of them earlier this year.
I've only had my 58 at the range once.
These were my first six rounds at 100 ft. I have no idea where the first one went.
I REALLY enjoyed shooting it and as soon as the weather improves I'll be back at the range.

I'm the oddball here in the forum and figured one 4" was enough.
I don't have any revolvers in 45.

Well, if you only had one, THAT would be IT
Very nice Kenny....now you just need a shooter grade one to take out and play with, so you don't get any fingerprints on that one

The S&W 58 covers a lot of roles. I know it is a big 41oz revolver but it still does a lot.

Its one of my favorite guns. Its just "different".
Its simple. I like the fixed sights. Its not a .44 Magnum yet its more than a .357 Magnum.
Its like a .357 Magnum with a bigger fist.

Beautiful gun. And that 19.5 gr WW296 is a great Magnum load and very accurate in My 41's.

..it's hard to see where the first one hits if your eyes are closed....
:-)
That is a beautiful 58...TOP END shooter grade for sure. But since we are all going around just once, better make it count...
You are lucky to have bought when you did... Try finding a 58 for sale these days...
Have a great Christmas and and NEW YEAR....

Well, not to disparage that fine 58.
But it's been more decades than I can recall
being able to say "My only 4" N frame".

I have seen that 19.5 gr load of H-110 / W296 before but have never tried it . I'm thinking I need to give it a try . I have always used IMR 4227 before . I sacrificed a bit of velocity but the accuracy has always been good . I have tried the original Keith load of 20 grs of 2400 with his bullet , H&G 258 and felt it was a bit too much for my Smiths . I have read that he later reduced it to 19 grs in his 57's ,4" barrel . He supposedly continued to shoot the 20 gr load in his Ruger Blackhawk that Bill Ruger had given him . I believe that Brian Pierce has the Ruger that Elmer was given . It has a brass grip frame . I have that same gun with a steel grip frame (been converted ) in 4.5/8" same as Elmers . I will sell others (a couple of
fantastic plastics ) but not that Ruger . Regards Paul

Nice looking revolver. There was an officer in a city in the county I worked in that carried one as his duty weapon. This was back in the early 80s.

I have a bunch of 4”, N frames. Possibly my favorite revolver style. None of mine are 41 Magnum. I did get to shoot one. I was attending a training class at the final day, after testing and shooting for class was completed, the instructors had a competition among the students. When the target faced we were to put one in the chest, one in the head and then shoot across the range at a swing clay pigeon on the other shooters target. First to break the clay wins. Simple.
It came down to a shoot off between myself and an Akron PO. I was using a Model 15-? and he had a Model 58. We went to the line, targets faced and six shots were fired. They sounded like three, dead heat. Reload and go again. About the sixth round we were still finishing in dead heats. RO says switch guns. Still dead heats. Long story short(I know, too late) it is decided to award two first place pins. Never happened before or since that I am aware. Great fun and as I recall, the 58 had a good action. He was using the Police load.
Thanks for helping me recall that event!
Kevin

I'd love a 41 Mag- seems that's all the ammo that's available.
Being a long snoot guy, I only have 2
A 520
and a Pre 29

...the 4" 57/657/58 are my favorite N-frames also. At this point I am down to:
1964 57 blue
1980 57 blue
1980 57 nickel Class A engraved
1986 657
1999 657 Mountain Gun
1964 58 parkerized
1974 58 blue custom
Had several more but sold them off to friends...
Also had one of the Keith style Blaackhawks with a blue Super Blackhawk gripframe. It was a great shooter but sold it off several years ago. Replaced it last year with a standard New Model made about 1977 and may one day have a SBH gripframe added. Hummmm...over on the Single Action Forums Ronnie Wells has brass gripframes...something to consider. This one has a REALLY sweet trigger.
All my Smiths get mainly cast bullet loads now in the 210-220 grain range with 8 or 9.0 grains of Unique. 8.0 gets 950+- fps and 9.0 1100 fps from a 4" barrel...easy on the gun, easy on the wrist and what else does one need. The original POLICE LSWC load averaged 950 fps...
If you load your own GT Bullets makes a GREAT selection of bullets at really good prices.
Bob

Ahh, hindsight. I remember in the late 70s model 58s would languish on dealer's shelves with $150 price tags and no takers, mostly unappreciated at the time. I bought a well-worn 4" 57 for less than $200 and carried it on duty for a while before switching to a Government Model Colt .45 ACP.

In my lifetime I have owned close to a dozen mod. 58's. I even carried one on duty for several years. Some were too nice to shoot, including two in nickel. The one I kept and have had for a long time is blued and marked SAPD. (San Antonio) It's got holster wear from being carried on duty but it is still a nice shooter

My 58 is also my only true 4 inch N frame. I have a 610-3 but it’s technically 3 7/8”.

Would love to find and buy a Model 520 ...
My M58 ... It shoots perfectly to POA with the old 210gn 'City Police Load,' and very accurately too.

Not trying to change the subject , just passing along a tip . I recently decided to buy and try out "Vectan " powders . I have to tell you , I'm really very satisfied . I used BA9 and BA7.5 in a 44 magnum . BA9 is about like Unique , BA7.5 feels / shoots like the old SR 4756 . I loaded up some BA7.5 and BA6.5 in 357 magnum and I have to tell you , it felt great when shooting them and shot even better . Vectan powders that I was using are single based . I would describe them as more of a " push powder " and not a quick sharp recoil . They push the gun back at you . The BA6.5 really reminded me of using IMR 4227 for recoil . It is in the range of ACC #9 . With powders / components for reloading becoming harder and harder to find , just thought I would pass along my experience with Vectan Powders . If someone wonders , " did they burn clean " and do they meter well ? The answer is " YES " very much so , on both accounts . I'm going to order some more . Regards Paul

I'm the 'odd man out' here, I guess... I have 6 'N frames', all with 6" or 6-1/2" barrels. Maybe one day my 'finances' will catch up to 'opportunity' and I can acquire some 4" barreled N frames, if for no other reason, 'cause I want to...

I have just one 4" N frame. This Model 58 that rode in my duty rig for 13 years and shows it.
We were in some serious social encounters, but it always got me home. It would be the last gun I would ever let go.
