Creedmore +P ammo in Model 19
I have a 1976 Model 19 coming in the mail and also some ammo from the Civilian Marksmanship Program in their Creedmore XSP hollow point semi +P ammo. I am assuming this would be fine in the model 19. It was all I could get at this time. These are 125-grain bullets with the below numbers
Distance FPS Energy ft-lb
Muzzle 1050 306
50 Yards 977 265
100 Yards 921 236
I thought I would ask before I marched out to the range with them.
Thanks, Heinz.

Is 38 Special +P safe in your 357 Magnum?
I rest my case.

OK, I was concerned with the short bullet length and the report of issues with short bullets and the forcing cone in the 19. I come over from the Luger forums and find it never hurts to ask first before you do something more stupid than the question :-)

You're a good sport, Heinz. I think Art Doc was giving the right and helpful answer with just a little good-natured ribbing thrown in.
Shorter bullet length in the .38 Special +P load will be fine; the reports you've read (on a long-debated subject for which there will likely be no final answer) applies only to .357 Magnum loads.
Some worry about bullet jump in .38s used in .357 cylinders possibly (slightly) affecting accuracy and you may want to read a little about that. And charge holes cut for .357 can get a little grimy ahead of the shoulder when .38s are used and not cleaned after, which can cause some seating problems for .357s later.
These are minor things, though.
Make sure your new revolver passes function checks and fire away. Be safe, have fun and enjoy -- Model 19s are among the best all-around revolvers ever made.

It's not so much the bullet weight as it is the powder used to propel 110 and 125 grain full power 357 Magnum ammo. Those full power loads use a heavy charge of slow burning ball powder. The burning characteristics of these powders leads to faster erosion of the forcing cone which can lead to cracks forming in the forcing cone. The 38 Special, even in +P form, cannot make use of these powders, so you should be just fine using 38 Special +P 125 grain loads.

Guys have been shooting 38s in 357 Magnums since around 1935. I don't do it, mind you because I have a mess of 38s and I prefer to use the correct ammo in my guns. I don't shoot 44 Specials in my 44 Magnums, either. But it's OK to use 38 ammo in a 357 but be aware rings of carbon may form in chambers due to the shorter case. You will want to make sure to clean it out.
