Howdy, and welcome from ol' Wyo.

Kudos for a nice job of describing your Chiefs Special.

It's actually a 3-screw -- there's one hiding beneath the right grip, and if you remove the grip it should have the same serial number as the butt stamped in it, minus the J.

Based on other 36-1s in my database, I'd say yours shipped in the last quarter of 1971.

The only questions I have are these: is it a round or square butt, and it is blue or nickel?

Default More Information on 36-1

Thank you Bob for taking the time to respond to my request and to add the comment about the additional screw.

I just posted a photo that answers your question about the finish (blued) and the butt shape (rounded).

On the portion of the yoke holding the cylinder is stamped "7769" and "G12" is stamped or engraved in larger letters. Any idea what these markings indicate?

Final question! Is the Gun Digest a good way to determine the sale value? It lists $250 for Good and $400 for Very Good.

Actually, that is the square butt.

7769 is an internal parts-tracking number, used only during the assembly of the revolver. G12 is either a fitter's mark or an inspector's mark, used for QC during assembly.

Heck no. The only thing worse is the Blue Book. Publishing schedules make it impossible for these annual publications to keep up with current market prices. The best way is to spend a little time checking actual completed sales (not asking prices) for similar guns on popular auction sites like Gun Broker.

That's a nice looking Chiefs Special.

I agree with everything Jack said.

I think you'll be amazed at the prices on the big auction site Jack mentioned. I'd easily say you have a =/- $600 Chiefs Special.

ps: the blue square butts are my favorites.

I agree.

Me too. I just have never been able to shoot the round butt I or J frames nearly as well as the square butt.

I know that a lot of guys say the round butt is easier to conceal. BUT, I have no problem concealing a square butt revolver, either in the kidney position or in a shoulder holster (when the weather allows regular use of a jacket). Heck, for more than a decade, I carried a 2" K frame every day. And I'm not a big man, as those of you know who have met me.
