29-2 8-3/8" barrel question
SEE POSTS 27 & 29 FOR PICTURES and UPDATE
29-2 local to my area for $1850.00. Here is a copy of the ad:
Beautiful 1977 Smith & Wesson 29-2 8-3/8" barrel with presentation case and cleaning tools.
Comes with literature and warranty card. Easily 99%+ finish.
Has the three T’s; target stocks, target trigger and target hammer.
Firearm was purchased 42 years ago and has remained local.
20 rounds of Winchester 240 gr. jacketed soft point will come with the purchase.
Seller did post pictures with the ad. Should I look into this and is it a fair price or is this COVID shut down driving me batty?

Although I own ‘em I’m no expert on pricing.
Prices appear to be all over the place.
One in a local swap rag recently was priced at $1200 without tools paperwork etc.
Then I see one similar sell on one of the auction sites for $2000.
The one you’re looking seems to be in the ballpark.
Five years from now what you paid will seem like a bargain.

Seems a little over priced to me as well, especially for an 8 3/8 inch barrel model with a later "N" serial number prefix. I see people mention the "three T's" a lot as a selling point, but I am pretty sure they were standard on most all 29-2's.
But, if you really like and want it, and it's in the shape the seller says, well they don't grow on trees, and will probably go up in value as time goes by, so maybe paying a couple hundred more now is not such a bad deal.

I think overpriced a bit too. There is a 29-2 8 3/8 with presentation box (inside deteriorated) with paperwork for sale at a LGS for $1499 or $1599 can't remember for sure which. I'm pretty sure they'd take a $100/$200 less to move it. $2k seems too high to me outside of a GB bidding battle anyway.

Unless it is unfired I would think $1200 - $1400 would be the top end on this. The price to sell it would be $1000.

I'd agree with that. Standard Catalog ANIB price (2016) $1200, Exc. $950. Nickel finish brings a premium, and "S" prefix brings 25-50% premium. Those would be dash-2's from 1968 or earlier. Too bad it isn't a 5" barrel, those bring 3x to 4x standard prices.

The thing is, someone will buy it but you have to ask yourself is this a grail gun or just an impulse buy? If it's an impulse buy there will be another one, maybe not in the same condition but model 29-2s are bought and sold every day. You may have to turn to the internet to get one but for the time being they won't be any more expensive.

I couldnt tell you the last time I saw an older 29 at a dealers. Maybe 2004.If you follow online prices as much as i do,$1800,with all those extras isnt that high. $1600 is more like it,but if he holds out,he might get his price.Next year $1800 might be reasonable

With presentation case, tools, paperwork 99% on finish. I see them go for that on GunJoker. I know crazy right! Seems a bit high for me though. At a LGS/pawn shop them guys have to make a living too.

Of course everyone from the old days will gripe about the higher prices, me too. I’m very frugal. Again it’s price vs condition, condition, condition. S&W revolvers are starting to get there just due. There climbing slowly. But inbetween we will see lower prices. Now I’m seeing lesser condition revolvers trying to get the higher prices. Buyer be aware. Look it over good before buying.
I’m seeing some prices at $1,200? Some are over $2k? Like I been saying anything under a $1,000 is a deal, today it’s a steal.
I made many online purchases and paid a average going price over a decade ago but the revolvers were mint, excellent condition like 99.99%. The finish is out standing.
Everyone wants a deal, some want a steal, I just want the best condition for my buck. Why should I accept anything less?

I haven’t seen used n frames for decades. Finding a used n frame in 357 was impossible. They started showing up as the plastic pistols gained popularity.
My online dealer went from zero 357’s to two m28’, one m28-2, two m27-2. He had five in a short time.
Let’s not forget certain revolvers are being discontinued that’s finishes and barrel lengths.

Let the gun rush and holidays slow down. Make a fan of ten $100 bills, offer, next I put money in each pocket, never show the bank roll. I put a $100 bill in pockets, two $100 bills in another pocket, haggle. Go on a slow day. Tuesday or Wednesday.

I agree it is a bit high but I have seen then sell for more. If the case is as good as the gun and it has all the tools and papers, it comes down to how much you want it? Is it a local transfer that you can save sales tax?
A good friend always said you can never pay too much for a good S&W - just buy it too soon!

Well over priced by at least 50%. There are a lot of guys with time on their hands throwing bait into the water to see if anyone bites...

There is "value" in being able to do a first hand inspection, as opposed to buying online.
Around my parts, something like this M29-2 is never seen on the market. Just the usual plastic.
Depends how bad you want it. Maybe you can negotiate a bit better price if you have cash money to lay out right in front of the seller.

I watched a guy pay a grand for a nickel 29-3 in a newer presentation box and the gun had timing issues and some flaking under the grips. I had just looked at it the day before and happen to stop back in for something else. Before you go paying exorbitant prices make sure you know what you’re getting

I sold the exact same model and package here on the forum back in March or April or so, except that mine was an honest-to-goodness unfired gun(except for the factory test, of course). Absolutely no blemishes, scratches, and wonderful deep blue finish. Very little wear on the case flocking, too. I couldn't get beyond $1150. Seven hundred dollars is an awful big jump in nine months or so, it seems to me.
Regards,
Andy

When it comes to guns, you can NEVER pay too much. You can only buy too soon.
The $1700 price may be too much today. But it will probably be market-correct in a year or three. Do you want to wait three years to find another one and then pay $1700 for it? Or do you want to enjoy it now knowing that you have an appreciating asset that will (someday) catch up to what you paid for it?
If you really want it, just buy it and who cares what it costs? And if you don’t really want it, let it go.
Good luck!

If you like it, and want it, and have the money available for it, buy it. I think it's a bit on the high end, but every S&W I bought in 2020 (four of them), I paid more for than the one before it, none of them were especially rare, but two were unfired and NIB. One of them is a nickel 6" M29-2 from 1979. It's a commemorative, but aside from that, the only things that make it more valuable are the finish and its unfired condition. I gave $1300 for it with its presentation case in August.

I think 1850 is about 400 too high, and 1450 would be the top end. I would want to see some pictures unless i could go see it. If this is at a dealer, do you have to pay sales tax on this? is it a consignment gun somewhere? Well, all inclusive 1450 Out The Door, and it better be 99%. Just my .02

I concur with Pete, 1450 out the door would be a fair price.

I just saw a used Pre-27 with rubber grips today in my LGS. They wanted 1200 for it and it looked in really good shape. I didn't examine it or see if it was a re-blue, but hopefully that gives you some idea on current N-frame pricing without even having original grips.

Thanks wetdog
Just want to update and let all know that I was offered a like new in the wood box with tools and paperwork at a very reasonable price by wetdog a member on the forum. Received it yesterday and I'm well satisfied. It is a beautiful blue 8-3/8 29-2 revolver. The box lining needs work but that's no big concern right now.
The original target grips are beautiful. I sure am happy the way things worked out for me. Attached are a few pics. wetdog sent me before I bought it. I have a set of ALTAMONT Coke's for it and will post a few pics. later of them installed.

Altamont Coke Stocks
Bought a set of Altamont Coke's to try out and keep from messing up the original stocks if I take it to the range for a try out. Not a bad fit for me and the price was right from the factory to me for $103.19 total including state sales tax. Attached are a few pics..

Without pics its hard to compare but a semi-local seller has one as described in OP's post that he was asking $1200 and is now at $1000.
Since I'm not a fan of the long tubes, I'm leaving for someone that is...

Wow, those grips look untouched. Smart to keep them as new. You can see a reflection in them sitting on the table !
