Default I found K Frame grips numbered with "20108"

Hi, hope I picked the right time period. I just purchased a Md 10-5 with some minor pitting and rust. The grips that came with it are not numbered to the gun, but have the number: 20108 stamped on the inside right grip. I've attached pictures, please ignore the cat hair, it was the only thing with some good lighting close by.

If you have the gun these belong to, please PM me. I'll need a picture of the serial number of the gun to make sure it's the real owner. All I need in return is enough for postage and a few bucks towards some hogue grips.

Hope I can reunite a "family".

Chris

Not sure if that stamp is a serial number?? K frame stocks eliminated the diamond in 1969 and ceased placing serial numbers on the inside of stocks in 1979. Just cannot find a K frame in that era that with that low of a serial number 20,108?? Maybe someone more familiar with 1070s K frame revolvers would know of a model made in that serial number range??

Well, it could have been D20108, which would be in about 1970. On the stainless revolvers, some of the stock medallion retainer washers were stainless steel possibly as early as 1965 or 1966. By 1973, all the washers were stainless, so it could also be 1D20108. There may be other possibilities too.

You nailed it Jack!

And could be as early as the 2nd half of 1968 when most of the grips had already 'lost' the central diamond.

Those are PC grips (plain cloths), the highest probability is they are from a Mod 10, 12 or 13.

Nice thought, but chances of reuniting those stocks with the original gun is virtually non-existent. You probably have better odds of winning the lotto!

It's hard for me to tell from the photo if the circle inserts are blued or stainless. If they're blued (I think they are), we can rule out stainless guns and guns made after about 1975. S&W standardized on stainless inserts in '73, but it took them awhile to use up parts on hand.

We can also rule out the model 15-3 2", which did come with SB PC Magna's. The serial number range in 1970 was 2K1 through 2K22037. 2K108 is a valid number, but 2K0108 is not.

Agreed.
The model 13-1 (there was no model 13 no dash) wasn't introduced until 1974, so we can cross that off too.

Serial number D20108 (1970) could be a 10-5, a 10-6 (HB) or a 12-2. Of the three, the 10-5 seems to be the most common.

I thought (and still think) they are stainless, from looking at the picture. But I could be wrong - it has happened once or twice before.

If they are stainless, the stocks came off a model 64. I believe 4” model 66’s came with target stocks. The Models 65 wasn’t introduced until ‘72. The model 67 also didn’t come out until ‘72 and I believe they had standard Magna stocks, not PC Magna’s.

Okay folks, what I think I'm hearing is there's no practical way to reunite these grips with the original gun. Which is okay because I was trying to be helpful. I'll keep the grips in my grip bin and put they back on whatever they'll fit when the time comes.

Appreciate all the knowledge on this forum.

Chris
