Default Model 36 Square Butt , 3 screw , Pinned , 2”bbl DOB

38 Spec , Blued , SN 566J26 .
I have the Standard Catalog but can’t find any Manu dates with a
“J” as the fourth digit of the sn .
A pocket gun I’ve had for about 20 yrs , nothing special about it
Just wondering when it was made .
TIA
Bob

Floating “J”, so that makes it ‘71-‘72 vintage, I think.

Look at 1971-72. So-called "Floating J" years. All J-Frames with more than one numeral before the J were made in these years.

Yes. The other check point is fewer than 6 digits besides the J (which isn't a "digit").

The 1982-83 numbers had one digit before the J, but always six total.

At 566J26, this one has a high enough number in front of the J that it almost certainly was produced in 1972.

Welcome to the forum from ol' Wyo.

You'd be better off posting a NEW thread instead of hijacking a three-plus year old thread.

If your Chiefs Special is truly marked "MOD. 36" on the frame in the yoke cut, it's serial number is NOT 2234.

Look at the bottom of the grip, and give us that serial number.
