Model 19-4

I found a model 19 and jumped on it. Just don’t see many around here and when you do they’re gone fast. It has a set of stocks with the speed loader cut out. I didn’t think they started putting those type stocks on until the 80’s. Am I wrong about that or did the stocks get swapped at some point?

What barrel length? I could not say about the grips.My 19-4 has football targets.

My 6" nickle 19-4 has the same grips. By the SN its a 1979 vintage, but the grips are dated 1984 on the inside. I bought it from the original owner and I thought the grips were original to the gun, but now I'm not sure.

19-4s were crossover time from football to speedloader cuts; you find factory examples with both and since targets aren't usually numbered to the gun it's almost impossible to know for sure.

K frame targets with the speed loader cut arrived sooner than the same stocks for the N frame. They showed up as early as 1978. I have a 14-4 that I bought new wearing those stocks. It shipped from the factory on July 21, 1980.

If you don't mind my asking, What did you pay for this find?

I have one that has only had the factory 3 shots through it and the box and everything that came with it I am considering selling.
No clue what to ask for it.

Purchased this pistol 6/1981. Only shots fired are the 3 from the factory, have the box with all the contents as shipped from the factory and original bill of sale.

Considering selling but have no clue of value.

That looks like it could be a "transition gun" , I can see a barrel pin, but does it have recessed cylinder? The S&W emblem is on the left side below the cylinder release, instead of on the right side plate. Since it has a nickel finish it should have a value premium over a blued one. Maybe $900 or so, if you have the box, tools and papers.

As I look at the picture with a magnifying glass, the gap at the rear of the cylinder looks tight. That would indicate a counterbored cylinder, as we would expect on a -4.

I traded a Ruger Redhawk that belonged to my dad for a 4” nickel 19-4. If the cylinder wasn’t recessed I probably wouldn’t have traded. It has a slot in the trigger guard for some sort of trigger stop you guys will all know about but I forgot what it was. But what was there appears to have been removed. I consider this as close to an ideal handgun as is possible.

Broker shows prices all over the place but NIB nickel should be $1000-1200 at least based upon what other similar ones sold for
I’d expect you could get a little more with all the fixings

You are correct; it was an internal trigger stop. S&W started removing them from potential duty/self defense revolvers after it was discovered the screw that held the stop in position could work loose and the stop could rotate & keep the trigger from cycling completely.

Nickel ANIB, more! On the other hand I've seen them for a better price on Armslist lately, although without box or papers. Maybe $800~900. I'd be afraid to clean them, LOL
