Model 66 New Find
Going through some of my mom's things she discovered she still had this gun. She was in law enforcement administration years ago and had acquired it for my dad (long since deceased) through one of Chiefs she worked for. It has the original box, cleaning tool and papers as well as another wood grip. In addition there is a pair of S&W handcuffs in their box that seem to have never been unwrapped. Wondering what you folks think about the age of this new found treasure. I don't care about value, as I wouldn't part with it. I would just like to know about the date(s) etc...
Thanks for your anticipated help!

Hi !
Welcome to the forum. Your revolver appears to be from 1975, and is a nice package with box and ephemera.
The target stocks are beautiful, and my personal favorite of the wood stocks to shoot.
I’m sure someone with greater experience will be able to chime in with a more narrow date range.

A very nice package. Congrats.
And welcome to the S&W Forum.
The Model 66 normally shipped with target stocks, as indicated on the box label. Those are made of Goncalo Alves, which was also normal on a Model 66 of this vintage.
The serial number puts manufacture in 1975, as noted above. It might have shipped in 1976, as only a letter can tell you for certain.

Welcome to the forum. That is a great gun. Enjoy your time here. Four inch K-frame guns are some of my favorites.

HideawayGuy, "new found treasure" indeed it is! Keep the box, tools and paperwork all together with it. Since its been in hiding for some time I would wipe it down good with gun oil. remove the stocks and wipe down the frame too. Enjoy it's a very nice revolver.

Same vintage M66 issued to New Hampshire State Troopers back around 1975.
Hope you keep it. It`s a beauty!

True enough. I bought a ANIB M66-1 round butt with 2-1/2" barrel a few months ago, at a gun show. In talking to the seller, he is a LGS owner in a nearby city, and he buys at auctions and estate sales a lot of the time. The revolver I bought, so he told me, he found at an estate sale over 20 years ago, and it had been in his safe ever since. So, 20 years in his safe, and another 20 in someone else's safe (1980 mfg date), in its little box, unfired, for all that time. All I can say to that is....Lucky Me. I happened upon it before anyone else did when it finally saw the light of day. As for the unfired part, I took care of that the next day.

The handcuffs are nickel. Still unwrapped. Was surprised to find them.

Only in as much as the photo shows. That's about it. Funny, the actual gun lived in a Chivas Regal velvet bag for all these years!

Box labels of that era did not have date codes

I took the 357 to the range today. First time shooting it and WOW, what a pleasure. Dropped 50 rounds and was ready for more! Had my M&P Sport II as well and ran a hundred rounds through that one too. Beautiful day to shoot! Really enjoying this pistol.

Just remember, stick with 158 gr. 357s. Better yet 38 +Ps. I have two 66s.

My brother carried this 66-1 the first 10 years that he was in law enforcement.
