Default S&W M-53

On another board a member posted a picture of his newly acquired M-53, it had a 4" barrel marked 22 Magnum. Is that factory correct ?

Yes, the barrels were not marked 22 Jet, just 22 Magnum.
The 22 Winchester Magnums were marked "22 M.R.F. CTG”

And if it was a ".22 M.R.F. CTG." barrel from a Mod 48, it would not have the extractor rod shroud under the barrel.

I'm seriously considering this one. It is a 53-2 with the box and inserts - no papers or tools.
I haven't actually seen it in person yet.
I'm thinking $900 is my top dollar on it.
Any thoughts?

Yes a target trigger; could be original as ordered or added later. they'd been available and standard on the flagship models for near a decade by the time the gun was shipped.

Notice directly above, the target hammer. Now those aren't seen very often in the Mod 53 specialized dual function hammer.

MY guess! 2 1/2" mod 19 with a 53 barrel and cylinder which will shoot the 22 Jet only!

My guess is Ned just made a 4" a rb grip profile, dont forget the model 53 has two firing pin slots, one above for the rim fire position and one for centerfire,
The only frame you might be able to modify to work would be a 547 but those have internal firing pin for center fire and a cartridge holding pin above to keep the rimless cartridge seated when fired.

Engine49guy is correct. Simply round butted a finish compromised 53 & added a 22lr cylinder.
I aint gonna round butt a RM
