re-finish ???
I've seen this on many different guns where the RR sight looks shrunk and has a dirty look that won't wipe off. Would this be one of the indications of a re-finished gun?

I hope not because if so that would mean I have a couple refinished that I'm sure are not. No, I don't think it means refinish. In some cases they have been replaced. Others will be along with opinions. I think my 6.5 inch early 29-2 looks just like that and I know it is not refinished.

What’s described in the first post is ( to me) more an indication that the finish is original. Pete

I have a Model 57 and and Model 29-2 with a similar condition. Neither have been refinished nor have had the red insert replaced.

My current inventory of 8 large framed S/W revolvers are fitted with these sights, and every one looks similar to your picture . There are no safe queens among them .......and none have ever been refinished.

Plastics can shrink over time. Some of those ramp inserts shrink to the point they don't want to stay in the dovetail.
