Default I wuz sniffing around this LGS....

And there is a 3 inch S&W 624 .44 Special. No dash.

Now this .44 has the rear sight broke off. Just the front part was one (square front, not the new rounded ones.)

And the Houge grips were obviously made for a K frame.. Didn't fit the frame right.

Action is tight. Front sight ok. Screws not bunged up.

Now $639... but one would have to find an original S&W rear sight and S&W N frame grips.

Sight would cost at least $100.

Decent grips at least $50.

Plus tax (they won't come down in price) about $50.

That makes it a $840 buck gun... and then it needs to be stripped to the bare frame and scrubed... Filthy.

Oh well, I have the 4 inch 624, no dash, but I'd love to have a 3 incher.

I would probably pass, your reasoning is wise.To add to the matter you are figuring on $50.00 for a set of grips. If you want the correct Combats they will probably run you $250.00.One of my cardinal rules in gun buying has always been condition condition condition, good luck.

If you are not looking to sell it and getting the pieces to make it right are not of the utmost importance at the moment. Then I would say buy it and make it a project gun. The old saying you never pay to much for a gun, you just bought it to soon. Overall condition is a factor, but as long as it is presentable..............then buy it, if it makes you happy.

If I wanted it to look at (I hear that's popular), I'd pass. As a shooter, $100.00 for a sight, and $50.00 for decent rubber grips - well I really like .44 Specials.

I think I would buy it at that price. I believe if you look your 4" straight in the eye, you can see loneness it its eyes, an emptiness that can only be satisficed by having close company of a 3 incher. And looking around for grips and a sight will give you something to do with your time.

I'll bet one can actually get .44 Special rounds right now....

I put CTC laser grips on my carry revolvers.....come in handy when it's dark. Also great for driving the neighbor's cat mad....don't ask how I know this.

Point out the issues, try and talk the owner down. It's worked for me before!

I reload .44 specials for my 624. 250 grain SWC hard cast with Unique powder. I have a paint can full of slugs and plenty of primers.

Well if I win one of those Billion dollar power ball lotteries maybe I will get it....

Why would anyone discuss buying a gun with their wife?

30-40 years ago, I did. Not much money in the till at the time. Nowadays more funds available, I do a lot of trading and selling/buying stuff too. Enough coming in and out the door that one more does not cause any questions to be asked.

It has nothing to do with 'liking' Grandkids. It is having to do with spending as if there is no tomorrow. While we are in a good position financially that can change with Biden & co. One would be wise to be debt free and have a nice bank account (we do.) But keep spending like there is no tomorrow and well, tomorrow will come anyway.

I do not like one-upmanship in the financial department. That can lead to unintended consequences.

I won't buy any gun from a shop that puts out dirty guns for display.

What part of the rear sight, the blade? Sight blades are cheap and you can find nice grips for less $100. Out west they're selling for around $1000.
I’d buy it.

Last time I was looking for a square front (pre-1993 ) style rear sight for a N frame they were getting VERY problematic to find .
Plus the mounting screw holes are not drilled very uniformly .
So the sight could be quite a problem.

Here. We've gotten beyond that a long time ago. She doesn't care what I buy. I usually inform her when seeking out a purchase. 47 years of GOOD marriage will do that.

Square front rear sight can be a problem, but can be overcome. I bought a 27-2 with an after market sight on it. 27-2 rear sights are checkered like the top of the barrel rib. They are extremely hard to find.I found one at Jack First. One! Pretty expensive. I ended up buying all the parts separately and assembled one for under $100. But it took several weeks. Food for thought.

A 3" 624 would be a Lew Horton .44 Combat Special. If they were still in business, you could email them the serial number to confirm that. Otherwise, it would be whatever was left over after the 5000 gun Lew Horton order.
They are typically worth way more than $639.00, but that would be clean, unmarred and with the goncalo alves combat stocks.
If I didn't already have one and had the opportunity you have, I'd buy it and hunt for the needed parts.
Since you have a 4" 624, you already know how much fun they are to shoot.

My $0.02.
You and your wife live the lives that make you two happy.
Do you want that gun?
Can you afford that gun?
Are you willing to pay that price for the gun?
If you answered YES across the board then you have the answer that works for you. Who really cares if someone else thinks you got screwed in the deal. Big reason I will NEVER post what I paid for a gun.

Yes, if had the bucks laying around and wanted a project I'd probably get it. I just don't have the will to fork over that much and then hunt down the parts. Plus you would need to totally clean that gun and polish off the mars. But it is tight and I bet once fixed up a dandy to shoot.

I'm gonna look at my parts box tomorrow. I know I have a rounded rear sight but I doubt a square one. Of course one can get one off Ebay but no guarantee the holes will line up.

And original wood S&W RB stocks??? $200 plus!! Best one could do is fix it up so well it equals what the going price of them are, but at the cost to were it's the same amount of $$ if you just bought one from some gun broker.

I have never discussed any firearms related purchase's with my wife. I make all my purchase's with my own money, never the "house" money. Since my wife never actually see's what I'm spending she never questions it. I never ask my wife what she spends money on either, none of my business.

Broke in half. Along the spring 1/2 way toward the front screw.

That's a steal if you happen to be the type of fellow that keeps spare parts on hand.

No, not thinking TEOTWAWKI... just the Weimar Republic just before WW2... bad enough. We are in trillions of debt... not unlike the Germans were after WW1! And if you print enough funny money... it won't be funny after a while.

Anyway folks, I pass on that 624... I'd love to tinker with it but I really don't need it.

I’m with you 100%. I owned a very successful business I started many decades ago. My wife of 27 years and I are on the same page about lifestyle and money. We dont buy anything we can’t pay cash for at that moment and that includes cars and homes. Not bragging just worked hard and put every penny away that we could. We skipped vacations for years and worked long hard hours. I regularly put in 80-100 hours a week for long periods. When you have no debt financial security follows.

I only have one son and he’s almost 39. No grandkids to worry about and that’s fine. He’s very independent too. He did 6 years in the military and works for the government now. His wife is in management with UPS and they’re doing great. I’m pleased.

I’m still a tightwad and have to justify buying toys. My wife though is my enabler. She’s very sweet and has a way of talking me into buying things I want. She’s a keeper!

Well, if things go that way, you may be able to get the 624 for
a lot less than they want, right now. Silver lining, all that.

No, the 624 will cost $122,101,102 dollars if it goes that way. But your retirement will still be what it is now... hence no more guns, or food... won't be afford to 'em with a barrel full of dollars.

I like a nice gun but I don't let condition be a deal breaker. Something like a damaged rear sight and wrong grips would never stop me from buying a gun like a 3 inch 624. I would expect to pay over $1000 for one that's correct.

But taken from years of experience, this is almost always a VERY short term proposition. Keeping her happy is a lot harder than keeping her mad!!

Buy it.
They’re not going to get any cheaper.
This time next year that gun in it’s current condition may bring $1,000 - $1,500.
Easily.
