Saw this too late to get pics tonight, but I'll get some posted tomorrow.

Closeups aren't so hot, but you can see relative placement.

Buford57,

Thank you! The crown appears close. The wording on the side is different and your photos reminded me that the Model 25-5 has “45 Colt” on the right side whereas the Model 25-2 is stamped “45 Cal Model 1955” usually. So, the barrel I have is either an extremely rare 4 1/4” variant or merely a cut down standard barrel. Lacking proof, I will put my money on standard.

Kevin

Kevin, nice talking to you today on the phone. You bought a nice gun, bet your glad you approached the gun shop. Glad Andy Horvath has it, he is great at customizing revolvers. Here is some pictures of the 25-2 he cut to 3 1/2” for me couple years ago. Wanted his name on it *Horvath Custom*, it also has a Weigand interchangeable front sight base. The reblue is NOT by Andy. Actually sold the gun but may try to get it back, not sure yet. Andy does a nice crown as pictured. One picture is the gun with his brother, an engraved 625 Bank Note. Larry

Larry,

Good talking with you also. Nice looking 25-2. I really like the McGivern bead and hope to do similar.

I hope to get mine back some time this year.

Yes, it is dao, but my competition days are over. I will shoot a couple of PPC courses for fun. This is just a rescue of an otherwise beat revolver.

I think it turned out well.

I too, think it turned out very well! I have a Model 14 that was made into a PPC gun by A.F. Behlert. It is probably my favorite revovler.

Got a set of Ken’s elk magnas to try on this revolver. And a grip adapter. Soon as I remember what box they got put in before the move.

The gun came out nice, Andy does great work. What barrel length? Is the front sight base a Weigand interchangeable blade? Great place to use my 6000th post. Larry

IMHO, the ballistic performance of .45 Colt out of a 3.25" barrel wouldn't be impressive either. I'd call it downright lousy. YMMV

Larry, I wanted 4 but the package deal included the chop saw special, 3 1/2” and a nicely done 4 1/4”. I am too full of Scottish blood to pay for a 1/4” amputation so it is 4 1/4”. The base looks like it may have been shifted from the donor barrel. I will post a better photograph.

Found this shot of the muzzle before the barrel was installed. If you need a different view, let me know.

Ok, I’ve posted pics of this one before, but here’s my take.
I wanted a custom gun that was one of a kind.
Mechanically, I can usually figure out which end of a hammer to hang onto, so I knew having custom work done would be entirely a custom gunsmith’s job.
I paid $750 for a 5 screw Pre-27 that had the barrel cut to 3 1/2” and had been re-blued so no collector value there. Overall in good shape so a great candidate.
I shipped it off to a custom smith who no longer works on S&W’s and paid $950 to end up with a 5 screw, 3 1/2” .44 Special - built to my specs.
Do I have more in it than I could ever get out of it? You bet.
Do I care? Not one wit.
It pleases me to own it and that’s all that matters.
Buy the gun, ship it to a competent gunsmith and don’t worry about the money.

You’ll (wrong contraction so I will go back to the language I was raised in) ya’ll would cry if you knew what I have tied up in this revolver. Much less than many suspect.

I have followed this thread since the beginning. Kevin, you now have what I consider to be one of the “best of breed” carry, S D revolvers.
Andy does good work and he got your “mutt” squared away in good order.
If it were mine, it would get a regular work out on the range, and carried regularly.
Nice rescue, enjoy it.

Kevin, congratulations on your "silk purse" project. It would still be sitting on my work table, had I bought it when it first came out.

I’m not buying anything that Bubba had his fingers in. Some guys just love having a project. Most of the time when you start adding up parts, and labor , if you don’t have the skill to DIY, you could buy a decent example for the same money. There is a lot of personal satisfaction in spending six or seven hundred on a $350 gun to turn it into a $700 dollar gun.

Hard to find a 45 colt for under a grand.

I'll take a 45 colt with a warm loaded 255 slug from a 3 1/2" barrel over a 357 with the same length barrel every time thanks. If you don't think, so what do you think of a 1911 Commander? Lots of guys think they are the top of the heap. Ya, it has a 4 1/4 " barrel, but that counts the chamber. Take off 1 1/4" for that and it has 3" of actual barrel. Plus a lighter bullet. IF a 25-2 will handle 45acp+p what makes you think a 45 colt cylinder won't handle the same pressure. I am here to assure you it will. But then a 255 gr bullet don't need a lot of velocity anyway.

I am have one on the bench right now that I am replacing the acp cylinder on.

Thank you, I remember I asked you a couple of times if you were interested before I decided to contact the gun shop. It was only a slight gamble, especially after the shop owner answered several specific questions I asked. I still appreciate the fact you brought this to my attention.

I paid $1000 for my Model 25 in .45 Colt several years ago. I paid $750 for my Model 625 in .45 ACP this last spring. Got lucky and bought that from a friend.

Ya, they are around now and again. I bought a 25-5 long tube a few years back for like $700 or 750. Big throats so another $100 for a recessed 44 mag cylinder I reamed and fitted, Then I chopped it to 5". i is the only one I have that started life as a 45 colt. I have made 2 from 629-1 both of which I picked up for $500, reamed the cylinders and fit 45 barrels I picked up for around a $100

While I have heard of 4” Model 25-2 revolvers being produced, I have never seen a factory example and very few custom ones. Sometimes you just have to take a chance and go for it. It helps if you know and understand what is available and what is possible to do. For what was paid for the donor, it could have easily been parted out for a gain.

I've paid a little too much for a project gun just so I wouldn't have to see it languishing in it's pitiful state. In this case even at $350 and materials I'm thinking the new owner did just fine. So congratulations on a good deed done!

Just an update. Had it out to the range just before business took me to Chicago, 230 grain hardball fmj shot orange size groups at 25 yards (75 feet). I am pleased with that. Once I can get my reloading gear set up, my first task will be loading about 1500 ACP rounds of the SAECO 453 over hardball doses of Bullseye. One of my favorite loads.

First square it up, then use the bearing to back course emery cloth then finer grits, then valve grinding compound, varying the pattern all the time. the outside edge could be done with small files then emery paper. Time and effort.

Most likely the 4" sight was silver soldered a bit out of square. Put the shank in something to hold it level sight blade up and put a small C clamp on it padded with brass or copper and tighten it up fairly tight. Heat it up with a small hand held torch and the solder will soften and blade should straighten up, if not a small crescent wrench set to just fit tthe front sight should allow you do get it dead on.

Not many N frames you can buy for $350. But, on Ebay there is a 4" model 29 barrel for $120, a 6" 25 barrel with a day left, an 8 3/8" 44 barrel, 4" model 41 mag barrel $94 buy it now, a 4" model 28 357 for $90 buy it now etc etc. lots of cylinders model 28 for $115 up, a recessed 44 mag for $200, a new style 44 mag for $175, a 29 cylinder and yoke for $110 buy it now. No 41 mag cylinders, but they show up. Point is with a $350 frame and another $300 I could have a 357, a 41 a 44 mag or a 45 acp. well, in my case there are 44 and 45 barrels as well as cylinders in my parts drawer. I also own 2 45 colt reamers I would probably make another 45 colt

A boat anchor. That is sacrilegious
Hey, I realize this thread is 8 months old, but I just had to throw a "like" at Steelslaver. Could not have said it better myself.
Now, I'm gonna go back where I was and read the rest of this interesting thread. Can't wait to see if the OP bought it!

Spoiler alert, the OP passed on the purchase. But, he was kind enough to pass the shop info along to me.

Yup, just finished reading the rest of the posts. Did not see that coming! Cool outcome to the story. Congratulations, strawhat! Glad it went to a good home AND to someone here, so we could see what happened.
I, for one, loves me some good gun mods. I won't brag but I've had a few done myself, so I guess maybe I appreciate them more than most. And I "get" the whole 'silk purse out of a sow's ear' thing. I love the challenge of getting a beat-up gun to good condition without spending more than it's worth. Not to mention, the way gun prices are heading toward outer space, picking up something that needs some work is not a bad way to get another shooter in the stable.
Anyway, great story and thank you very much for blogging it all here. Well done!

That is a nice one.........

I have a coupla chopped "Moon-Clip" guns and I really enjoy them with .255swc on 6.5gr Herco crimped in the groove and Foll Moons..........

Somehow, I missed this post. Nice revolvers. The one without a spur, is that also a “th&Wesson”? Guessing Model 25-2?

The spurred revolver, a Model 1950? 5” barrel?

Although I would personally pass I’m glad you posted it to serve as a warning to others. Some things are better left to professional gunsmiths.

The OP passed on the purchase but was kind enough to also let me know where it could be found. I got it and took it to Andy Horvath. Had my shop not been packed away for the move, I would have done the work at home. The hardest thing would be cutting the grooves in the back strap.

Looks like a giant piece of Leavarite to me.
More work than it is worth or ever will be worth unless you have a lot of spare time and do not value your time.

It turned out very nice. Compact, as much as an N frame can be yet accurate out to as far as I choose to shoot.
