66-1 Unlucky Day...
Some days you eat the bear, some days the bear eats you.
Today was the bears day. One of the clerks at a local pawn shop knows me, and sent pictures of this to my phone. Pretty decent looking 66-1, but when he told me the price I was headed for the door...$549...Asked him to hold it, said I’ll be there inside 30 minutes. Recently their corporate have been real sticky about such stuff, and he said sorry but I can’t pull it from the shelf. Headed that way, but got another text before I arrived that a guy walked in and bought it as soon as he saw it, well duhh. Don’t blame my friend, he has to follow shop rules, and who knows, one of the corporate guys may have even been there, as they are from time to time.
I don’t own a 66, several 686’s, but none of these. I’m guessing I missed out on a great deal, thinking it’s a $900+ gun. Never got to see it in person, but the pictures look pretty good.
How far off am I?

I think $900 is a little high for that barrel length. Just me.

At $549 though, I'd have bought it a soon as I saw it, too. Better luck next time.

Thanks Bobby, I don’t know much about 66 values with respect to barrel lengths, but I know you do...Feel a little better, I’ll only cry in one beer and not dilute the rest. 😂

Local shop told me they`d hold a model 29 for me. Said I`d be in tomorrow. Gave my name and phone number. I was excited. Got up early and made the hour drive to their shop. Says I, " I`m here to pick up the Model 29 you held for me last evening" "Oh,we sold it".Topton,Pa.

You ain't been watching Gunbroker lately. Getting darn close.
At $549 I would have been looking for Scotty to beam me there.

NEXT TIME
Would they hold it if you gave a credit card number ?
I would not buy it with CC but might let your friend take it off the shelf.

Good question, have to ask next time I’m in the shop. Honestly didn’t think about it until after the fact, figured I could just head over and have a look, then grab it, live and learn. I’m the same, don’t buy them on credit, but might have been enough to pull it.

Although I don’t live in the US, it sounds quite cheap
I have a 66-3, the second gun I bought, and it’s a fantastic shooter, very accurate
In fact they’re so nice I recently bought a 66 no dash in 4”
And a 19-3
They just don’t make them like that anymore

If I make a deal with you, tp hold something for me, and I drive there first thing, you lost my business
Last time I went into a pawn shopI was looking at some older gun, I asked the guy to pull the grips. He said why? I said so I can see if they are original to the gun. He said, assume they are not. I walked out

Also me too. a price of 900.00 dollars is a sort of high price for a 3 inch model 66, for that 6 inch version I would have to think long and hard about going over 500 dollars and it would have to be in nearly new condition.

That’s no $900 gun, but being offered $549 and not being able to bid would certainly annoy me....a lot. I feel for you.

Easy fix for next time. Just put a minimum deposit on it by credit card over the phone to get it marked sold. I have done that without request by the salesperson just so I would feel secure in mind that there will be no funny business take place before my arrival. If inspection should fail, I would ask for a credit card refund or if they balked at that, tell them you will deny the payment when the statement arrives.

They have a term for preventing just what happened to you, it is called "Credit Card on File"
Sorry for your loss, $549 was a great deal on a great revolver!!

Definitely a strong buy at that price. I know I wouldn't pay 900 for a 6". but that is just me. I have paid in that range for a 2.5 - 1 with grass horn stocks.

Well....considering December 2020 saw not 1 but 2 3" 66's sell for $3000 each on G/B.....I'd be crying at missing a shot at any barrel length 66.

Good gun to take a pass.
357 in a K-frame was never a great idea. It's good to carry a lot and shoot little. 6'' is a range gun and for that L or N frame are way better.

NavyCCPO, $549 IMHO would have been a good deal, one I would have jumped on. S&W 66's go from $850~$1300 all the time on Gunbroker. I own a 66 no-dash SS front and rear sight that came from an estate sale.

Me too! I already have a very nice 6” Model 66 and I’d buy a spare in a flash at $549. Particularly a 66-1. Everybody’s got an opinion, I guess.

I payed 200 less than that for my dealer NIB 66 type revolver with 4 inch barrel. But I guess I am old. In my mind, paying even 500 for any modern K frame is crazy. I guess I won't be getting any revolvers soon! I bought my 28 with the 6 inch barrel. I figured, it is big and heavy and not concealable, and the weight is there to dampen magnum firing, so why not get a longer barrel and get a bit more efficiency? BTW my greatest Smith regret may be selling my 6 inch 629 years ago.
