27-2 3 1/2"
The LGS had this blued consignment gun priced at 2199.00. Appeared to be LNIB or dam close w/ all goodies. Box was a bit tattered. Tool bag unopened. Seems the owner is pretty proud of it. What might be a good counter offer?

I want $2250 for mine, and sold one in the last month for that on this forum.
What would it hurt to offer $2000?

At some point sanity has to prevail. $2200.00 for a used S&W .357 revolver? Start putting some rounds through it and in a couple of years after the current insanity is over and it might sell for half what you paid for it. Who knows? People can ask anything they want but when buyers stop paying ridiculous prices the actual selling prices will come down.

If you've absolutely got to have a 3.5 inch 27-2 LNIB then offer $2k and then pay what they ask. On the other hand, there is a very nice 5 inch 27-2 on the Forum classified area offered for $1250 (no box/papers) which seems a much better buy to me. Good luck.

I would offer $2000. but if I was the seller I wouldn't take it and if I was the buyer I wouldn't leave the store without it.
I have one I use and it's not for sale at any price. Larry

They aren't making anymore. Tell that story to those that bought Thompson Machine guns for $1200 to $1500 in the late 70s and early 80s and are now worth $25,000 to $45,000.
I bought a new Corvette in 1970 for $5400. What's it worth more.
I agree with your premise when it comes to modern guns.

It’s easy to make comparisons but how many are actually valid? I bought a new Corvette in 1996 for $42,000.00. Sold it six years later with 11,000 miles on it for $21,000. When I add the cost of insurance and registration fees for those six years all I can say is OUCH! Full autos and revolvers are apples to oranges. No one can really predict the future or we would avoid costly mistakes. I still say that the excessive prices people pay for the almighty 3.5” 27s are excessive and I happen to own four of them. Value is in the eye of the beholder, especially if you be holding said object in your own hands

I hope you still have that '70 Vette. I have a 2014 Stingray M7 purchased two yrs ago and I will lose money when/if I sell it. Older Smith revolvers though...................

Yeah I still remember 1970. It was FIFTY ONE years ago. How old are you? You seem determined to pay $2,000 for a used .357. Ask yourself one simple question. If the would be sellers of model 27s for $2,000.00 really thought buying one would be a good investment then why are they anxious to sell quickly during this temporary panic stage

Profit taking, need some cash, never uses it and wants to buy a case of .223/5.56 ............... lots of valid reasons.

Well as corvettes go, I had a 61 hard top convertible.
Aside from that, I had a 66 on the want list and it did not take long before I figured out that I was not going to pay the going rate for a stainless M 19. As for a 3.5" M27, yeah, I want one, but I have got to sell off a few other prizes I had to have first, but I am not is any rush. I do however think that prices will drop somewhat.

Op asks for a idea of a good counter-offer. With today's panic driven stuff aside I can remember when I used to deal with a couple of local LGS's that took in consignments. At the time (early 2000) the deal on consignments was flat 10% for the LGS. This was when full transfers were $15 (now $75).
If you go with that old premise then $2200 = $1980 for the gun owner, and $220 for the LGS, so a $2000 offer would be attractive for sure to the LGS ($200) and they would "suggest hard" that the owner accept $1800.
I don't know todays high pricing schemes, but any LGS around here aren't willing to do consignments, they would rather offer $800 or maybe $900 tops to the owner for that pristine 3-1/2" 27-2 with all the goodies, then price it on display for $1699 plus tax, bg check, if not $1799.
Either way, around here it will be gone in the same day out in the case. Seems to be a lot more disposable income among younger people (or maxing out cc's) cause I can't find guns or ammo anywhere.
I suppose that is the beauty of offers: all anyone can say is no, or counteroffer, however with consignments it will take longer cause you offer to the LGS and then they have to contact the owner, unless they have a pre-set lowest allowable agreement (most don't). Meantime along comes loaded up Harry (just got his and the wife and kids stimulus, or backlogged unemployment lump sum), takes on look and planks out what they're asking and gone..gone..gone.
OP: take it all with a grain of salt......you know that we are the very best enablers out there and if you are in need of further "help" spending your money...just ask.
PS Personally I like the 3-1/2" so I wouldn't take $2200 for mine (well...maybe if I like the person offering).

3 1/2" M27-2's with the box and doc's do not come around every day, that price does seem a tad high and it is a shame as at that price people will be reluctant to shoot it, carrying and shooting these is where the magic lies. Offer what those above has suggested and see where that goes
I really do like my 3 1/2" M27-2 and almost glad that it didn't come with box and doc's, I do not feel bad when I take it to the range or carry it once in a while, I picked it up about three years ago on a GB auction for right under $1k

OP - Do you want a shooter, or a collectable? At that price you better keep it LNIB if you want it to maintain as much value as possible.
LNIB collectable guns are tough ones for me. I want to shoot them, but I also don't want them to lose any value, so they just sit there taunting me. It's like the Tell Tale Heart...
As for the price, it seems high to me, but no worse than what Pythons are going for, so it looks like the 27s are finally catching up with them.

Probably. I expect to lose money on a car but not on a gun and I can’t even remember any time that I have ever lost several hundred $ on any gun. If I can’t buy a gun at a decent price I don’t buy it even if I want it. Patience pays. But I shouldn’t have bought that Vette because those 11,000 miles cost me more than the price of a brand new less expensive car. Stupid on my part. But I’m looking at taking a big loss on a gun for the first time ever. Several years ago, after getting into Trap shooting I bought a brand new Ljutic Trap gun. Thought I would keep it forever but now due to health problems I’m not really able to shoot. So the gun is like new but when I sell it I’m going to lose thousands, not hundreds.

These are some of the finest revolvers ever made. It’s “worth” whatever someone will pay for it and I’ll guarantee someone will pay $2,200. Wouldn’t sell my pre model for anything south of $2,500 (with zero plans to do so).

If you gotta have it and will never shoot it then buy it. If you plan on shooting it then pass and find a shooter. I am in the I shoot what I own camp. I paid $650 for mine about three years ago, no box, tools or paperwork and about 95%. Wish you luck.

Me too AJ, exactly! I found this 27-2 about three years ago at a pawn shop about an hour away from home. No box, only what you see for $650. I sent off for the letter several months after. First time I had ever done so for any S&W.

This is my 27-2 shooter
About 3 years ago it came with a very nice presentation box and papers for $1500. The box was worth about $250 making the cost of to me about $1250. I thought that high but I wanted it as a high condition shooter and I do shoot it often at the range. Today's market is up compared to a few years ago, but I would not be interested in paying $2000 or more for a 27-2 with papers and box.
You need to determine why you want that blue 27-2. If you want it as a LNIB collectable with papers it might be worth $2000 or more to you. If you want it as a shooter I would look for a shooter at a lower price.

OK, based on the great varied opinions, which I asked for, I have decided to pass on the LNIB 27. I am going to look for a more used, shooter, version for probably half the price. I will post in the WTB section and fish there. Thanks for your input. It really helped.

This 3.5” 27-2 WAS my shooter. Shipped Dec. ’71 and ‘rescued’ in 2005 from owner who had used Hoppe’s #9 on the nickel at some time. No box, no papers/tools but in perfect shape other than its freckels. Shot it until 2007 when I sent it to S&W Performance Center for function and performance inspection and complete Factory Nickel Refinish. Since then it has assumed the throne: safe queen.
I really should let it out.

If you are looking for a shooter, you might also want to consider a 4" Highway Patrolman/Model 28. They are just a dressed down Model 27. They used to be inexpensive, but prices have risen substantially the past few years. You might still find a reasonably priced beater that will make a great shooter.
Here is my pre-28 and 28-2 surrounding a 4" 27-2. You will note a strong family resemblance in their lines:

Sadly, this thread seems to reinforce the reality that I’ll likely never own a fine example of this masterpiece.
$2K neighborhood for a handgun simply ain’t in the cards for this schoolteacher. I guess I’ll have to keep living vicariously through the pictures of others.

Just keep looking. One will show up when you least expect it. So save those nickels and dimes!

Here is some straight talk. A 27-2 with holster wear, a buggered screw or two, grips in okay condition, a pronounced turnline, lots of powder burn, a few scratches and some minor pitting or flaking would be a fine example in my eyes so long as it locks up tight and shoots straight.
