Default Model 14, 4" Barrel Versions...

Does anyne have information about the 4" versions of the Model 14, or can someone expand on what is published in the SCSW IV (only edition I own)?

When I owned a Model 14 the first time around I was led to believe it was only made in 6" barrel versions. I now enjoy shooting another Model 14-2, still 6", but I occasionally see 4" versions pop up online.

Some I see are the 4" heavy barrel version documented in the SCSW as a special run of 1040 called "Dayton", but some are outside that range of serial numbers, or predate the Dayton edition. Some sellers refer to more than 2000 of the Dayton-style 4" version. A little confusing.

I have read here that only a fraction of the 1040 went to the Dayton PD, which makes sense, because a thousand revolvers in a single order would be a lot for the Midwest (a retired LEO laughed when I asked him, his comment was "special order duty carry revolver? 1000 piece order? LAPD, maybe!")

Earliest one I noticed sold recently, but not a unique example:

I never paid attention to 4" Model 14s because I had several 4" Model 15s on hand, so I can not say too much about those

However, in addition to the 4" and 6" Model 14s, there were also 8 3/8" variations.

I do not have a photo of my 8 3/8" to post, but it is an amazing shooter. That long sight radius absolutly makes a difference

Default Model 14, 4" Barrel

My 14-4 is an early 70's model and is the 8 3/8th inch .. Fun to shoot and I do not use heavy loads.....and accurate (not for me but an old shooting buddy could nearly cut the center out of a target from 25 yrds)

My 6" 14-2 is a great shooter, very happy with it. That was what made me curious about the 4" version, since I don't see the utility of one as a duty gun given that there were plenty Model 15's at the time.

I found some of what I was looking for in this thread in the meantime:

......STRANGE MODEL 14.........
