Square Butt J Frames
I like square butt J frames.
My question is, were there ever any square butt centennials or hump back bodyguards (like the 49, 38, 649) made with square butts?
Here are few of mine:
36-1 3"
37-0 3"
31-1 2"
I also have a 37-0 2" but no picture of it.
Please post pictures of yours.

No, S&W didn't make square butt Centennials or Bodyguards.
Here are a few of my favorite square butt Chiefs:
October 1953 Airweight, 29522, 1 of 923 square butts with an aluminum cylinder, according to Dr. Jinks
May 1956, 55693, Bright blue finish
October 1959, Model 36
December 1962, Model 36, nickel

J-Frame Square
My two favorites...Probably because they are the only two I own.
Model 36 no dash from 1971.
Model 60 John Jovino from 1984.

I had a square butt nickel M36. Bought it from a former Oklahoma LEO in the early 80s for 125 bucks. Carried it a lot in a specially built briefcase, way before the concealed carry law was passed. I never really liked it so I gave it to a friend when he told me he wanted a J frame for his wife. Actually, that was fun, because I mailed it to his house out of state and I think he fainted when he opened the box. Long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.
He's long gone now, and more's the pity, he was one of the best friends I ever had. We swapped a lot of of guns through the mail over the years. Bad boys! Vietnam vet, LA Sheriff's Office retiree, gun dealer at some point in time, super gun knowledgeable, and all around great man. I still miss him.
But thanks for the memories!

I, too, prefer my J frame revolvers with square butts. I frames too. I find I'm able to shoot them better than the round butts, since they fit my hand better and put my trigger finger in the right place with less effort.
I carried this Model 36 of 1964 vintage for several years:
I no longer carry it because I was able to purchase old ivory stocks for it from a fellow SWCA member. If I ever had to use it for defense, I didn't want those ivories to end up in a PD property room. I don't have a photo of it wearing ivory.

Great revolvers all. Don't forget the J frame square butt 22lr. The only J frame I have. A 1981 Model 63. Took me some time to find the square butt J frame target grips but found them (NOS) on Ebay a few years back.

There are several grip manufactories who make round butt to square butt conversion grips that feel and look like stock J frame square butts. I've had several on J frame Centennial & Bodyguard models over the past 50 years. For me they feel better with a T grip. One manufacturer is Altamount. Herretts custom makes their detective stocks to achieve round to square or at least they used to.

Pardon my ignorance but is there such a thing as a lightweight J frame with a square butt? I have a 342-1 and several pre model 10 square butt snubnose rebolvers. All the nice revolvers posted here look like steel frame guns.

In my initial post I posted a picture of a Model 37.
Model 37s are Aluminum frame AirWeights. I have two of them with square butts.
Below is a 2" 37. Weighs a little over 14 oz.

I had a nickel Model 36 square butt. Very pretty gun. I bought it from a former OK LEO for $125.00. Long ago and far away as we say. I gave it to a friend a long time ago, too. Never really warmed up to it although I carried it a lot in a secret compartment of a briefcase that was modified for the purpose.

Wow, that must have been fun at the airport metal detector! And I always thought they gave me a hard time over my "hidden" Swiss Army knife with the lethal 2.5" blade...

Yes, the Model 37 came in square butt. Here is mine (at 2 o'clock) with a few buddies.

3 in hand plus an "imposter"
I also like the SB J frames. Like others...fits my hand a tad better and gives better control for me.
The Model 31-1 (1975), the Model 36-1 blue (1976) and the Model 36-1, nickel (1982), are all SB.
The "imposter" is the Model 34-1 (1972)....22LR...looks, and acts like a SB but is a RB wearing some factory wood "conversion" grips.
Like em all....nice clean shooters, can be easily carried in OWB leather for comfortable day hiking the blue ridge, local woods, plinking...or paper punching.

These conversion grips from a Model 60 Pro are favorites of mine. Instant square butt 638-3.

I had a 3" 36-1 pinned barrel, from about 1981, sold it last year... Wish I kept it.
i was not in the same place financially at that time, and thought it was a good idea to sell, as I rarely shot it...
I am always looking out for good J-frames- looking at a snubby pre-lock blued model hopefully tomorrow, gonna try to trade in a couple Marlin rifles I rarely shoot towards it... Even though one of the marlins, I know I will miss... A really nice laminate stocked 883SS in 22 magnum.
My wife keeps saying I don't need more guns, so to keep getting new ones, I have to trade some in even though I have the money to buy them. Gotta keep the wife happy though.

I've discovered that sq butt J frames are much easier to shoot than rd. butts. Actually neither fit my hand that well but the sq butt is a good candidate for a pachmayr grip. I just put some on a 31-1 and the improvement was amazing.
Of course I'll keep the original stocks which are numbered to the gun but I also want to shoot the gun a bunch.

Same here.
Have you tried any of the various J-Frame target stocks that fit one or the other butt, or both?
Personally I like shooting mine with almost any stocks even a little bigger than the original S&W ones (although those are hard to beat for elegance ).

I looked for some wood target stocks but seems everyone wants a lot of money for those, especially S&W stocks. Pachs are about $35 new and they fit my hand very well.

A swallow can’t carry a coconut! A 5 ounce bird can’t carry a one pound coconut? Plus it’s a temperate zone, there are no coconuts.

I just picked up a 36 no dash snubby square butt for $450 (traded in a marlin 60 towards it so not so much out of pocket)
Weird thing though, first time in about 8 years of having my LTC, I had a delay put on my account - can't pick it up till the 25th, unless they call back sooner.
that's a first for me, I have probably bought 6 guns in the last 3 months, and several dozen overall, never had a single issue. And my state doesn't have waiting periods on stuff either...
Shop owner said it could be just due to volume of calls, but he called on another guy at the same time, and the other guys went through.
Annoyed, but happy I got the pistol, and can take it home soon.
Has a little muzzle wear from a holster, Owner said he bought it off a police officer, was a back up piece, and was pretty well cared for. Grips are excellent, no-dash model 36,and serial number starts with "J" so I think it's pretty early.

A J with five numbers would be 1969-1970.
A J with six numbers would be 1973-1982.

I remember when I bought my M36 (round butt) new for about $123.00 back in ‘76. Shoulda also bought the square butt M36 in the case next to it (for the same price). Good times...

Well, ironically, about 20 minutes after posting my last post, the shop called, said it was cleared with the FBI and I could pick it up.
It’s pretty nice, grips are great, light holster wear, one tiny rust spot on the side plate. I’m gonna try to polish it out just with rem oil wipes or 0000 steel wool and oil.
It has a J with 6 digits J23xxxx so I guess 73-74
Here it is in all its glory. I’ve cleaned it since taking these and the bluing, like my model 15, is beautiful!

As for the Body Guard/Centennials, I'm not sure the SB would have gone over too well. The SB on those models would negate the advantage of ankle/pocket carry. Even the J-RB targets can print a little to much in those cases. Just my opinion from personal experience.

YES... I don't have it anymore but I used to have a SB Chiefs Special Airweight that also had the rare aluminum alloy cylinder.
It was not possible to shoot without changing out the cylinder but I had it in the original box as a collector gun. So all the way back to the early 1950s S&W was making them. I also have a model 37 SB from the mid 1960s.

Was there ever a true square butt J frame where the front and rear grip corners are not rounded? Like on my project pre Model 10?

i only have 1 square butt, a M34-1 snubby, but also have the same gun in round butt. The round butt came with the checkered 'banana' grips, but those were quickly exchanged for the smooth banana's.
I have square butt target grips, but neither my wife or care for them on the snubbies. They just seem to overwhelm the symmetry of the revolver. The magnas are nearly perfect as is. but I do have the smooth version on order from Altamont. The 'silverback' laminate (cheapest). The checkering on the magnas is just a bit too agressive for either of us.
However, they are beautiful on a 4" M63, or M34-1. I stopped my M34-1 buying a bit too quick and do not have a 4" square butt. Not likely to get one either with the prices they are bringing now compared to 2019 when I bought mine.

It could be carried by an African swallow.

I'll see with the Altamonts AFA their disclaimer about allowing 6-9 weeks for delivery.
I checked the Altamont web site every week or so for the smooth magna J frame square butt and it always had a "Not available" on the photo.
This last time the 'not available' was gone and a "buy" button was next to the pic, which I immediately clicked on and ordered.
So, apparently, they had just completed a run and were ready to ship. I'll see just how long it takes before they're headed my way. In any event, they ARE in process, so, I'm happy with that.

The target grips do look a little bulky on a 2" J-frame, especially the older style which is thicker in the palm area. I like them on the 3" version.
And as someone else said above, it is an easy way to turn a round butt into a square butt if you prefer that look or feel.
edit: the "older" version I was referring to is on the right in the pics

Didn't John Jovino have a run of square butt Model 60s in both 2- and 3-inch?
I know the square butt Model 36 was a favorite of NYPD plainclothes officers.
For those who came in late, John Jovino was the famous gun store in Manhattan that used to get the police business. I understand it finally closed a few months ago. The store opened in 1911, which is easy to remember because of the Colt 1911. The Imperato family (the family that owns Henry Repeating Arms) owned the store since the 1920s.
Jovino got S&W to make some special runs for them, and they also bought up a bunch of Model 25s back in the 70s or 80s and made a nifty N-frame .45 Colt snub nose called the "Effector" if I recall correctly.
