Default Model 28 question

Were there any Model 28's shipped from the factory with a high polish finish like the 27's? A local dealer called me today and has one. He is a darn good expert when it comes to firearms and says he is sure it is not a reblue. Didn't ask which dash. Going to look at it tomorrow with possibly bringing it home.

I've owned number of 28s through the years, and they have exhibited a pretty wide variation in finish. But although some were more highly-polished than others, none of them was up to the Model 27 level of polish.

Get the grips off and check for the R to indicate a factory refinish but as noted, a 28 has a satin blue.

Either way the 28 is a fine revolver. At a fair price I would buy it with or without original bluing.

Even if it was factory refinished, it won't have the high polish of the 27. S&W's policy was to not change the finish on a Highway Patrolman.

I know of commemoratives that shipped with the high polish of the Model 27. WSP 28-2 1982 for one. 6 inch barrel with the badge cartouche stamped 8n the side plate.

I have 2 28-2's. One is very obviously more polished than the other, but it still doesn't approach the level of polish on my Model 27-2.
Gun on left is 5 digit N418xx (1969-1972).
Gun on right is N5373xx (78-80).

I have 7 M28's and they all have pretty much the same finish which is the satin. I do have one that has a cylinder that approaches the finish of a M27 cylinder. I attribute that to just somebody grabbing what they needed to finish a gun at the factory

Would S&W offered a special order Model 28 with a high polish? I looked at the gun today and I'm satisfied it has not been refinished. Stampings are too sharp and sideplate fit is perfect. Didn't have a screwdriver to check any stampings on the frame. It is definitely a polish finish. Maybe not quite to the degree of a 27, but itspretty darn close.

I'm sure that very model has it's rare exceptions and it is possible somewhere along the line you could special order a revolver's finish. It is also possible that it was refinished.

Model 28 finishes do vary, generally from a dull, almost matte finish to what looks closer to a brushed finish to a mildly polished finish. Some pictures would be most helpful here.
