Just won a 66-1, what do you guys think?
Like title says, I won it on GB and can't wait to get her in my hands! It's a 2.5" with S&W combats and box, not too sure about any papers. Can I post a link of my won auction? I'll try and post pics from the site.

Another beautiful piece! I wanted to get one with the standard stocks like yours and put those Tylers on. That is a nice set-up!
But I have a thing for Combats and when I saw this one I jumped on it.
It was funny. I saw the auction and let it sit for a day or two. On the last day, one the last hour, I placed my bid and was pleasantly surprised to see that I won it the next morning!
I'm sure I probably paid a bit, but I've wanted a snub 66-1 for years and kept putting it off. I figured I'd better get one now before they get even crazier in price.

Lovely gun.
At the range any quality .38 Special will do. Any +P will do, too, and you're just going to have to shoot some .357 Magnums through it. Again, any quality ammunition will do. You'll discover that the .357 Magnum rounds are stout but very livable. I don't see the need for .357 Magnum in a carry piece but YMMV. Quality hollowpoints. Hornady. Remington. Etc. Regardless of whether you carry, 38, .38+P, or .357.
Not that wadcutters or semi-wadcutters won't work, they will, so you have lots of options.

I have 500 rounds of 38spl FMJ that I bought a couple of years ago at Academy. And maybe one box 357mag 158HP. I'd like some good carry ammo that will perform in this litte beauty, even +P 38 if I can find it.

Very nice revolver, I love the combat stocks. I couldn't get all the pics, just one with the box, but I couldn't quite make out the SN, although I think it's about the same age as mine (1981).
As for what ammo, I've been shooting some moderate magnum hand loads in mine, 158 grain JHP at around 1200-1250 fps. Certainly .38 Spl. +P would be just fine, too.

I liked the size of the factory stocks, but wanted to change them for their protection, so I put a set of Altamont stocks on mine.

There are lots of options now, most of which have appeared in the last decade or so.
When I carried a .38 Spl for personal defense, it was always loaded with Hydra-Shok cartridges. They were the Federal type, jacketed. The original Scorpion Hydra-Shok cartridges are collector items now. Here's a picture of them. These are some that I bought nearly 50 years ago, before Federal bought the rights to the design and put jackets on them.
In the second photo, you can see the difference.
I carry a short barrel stainless .44 Special now.

Congrats, wonderful revolver, the -1 is my favorite version of the 66. Speer Gold Dot short barrel load .38spl +p has a good record on the street for a self defense load.

Yes, I just linked that one pic since I wasn't too sure about linking an auction. If I get downstairs I'll post the link since it's a closed deal now.

Now that I think about it, I believe there's a box of Federal JHP +P around here somewhere that I bought for my j-frames. I think I shot a cylinder in each gun and put the box away somewhere.

They show as available on the Altamont website. Look for S&W K Round Classic Panel Super Rosewood Checkered with Silver Medallions. $60

I saw a 4" bbl online. I didn't see any 2.5" anywhere. Probably easier to change out the bbl than to cut it. Finding that ammo is gonna be tough right now. Everybody is sold out (or was a few days ago).

I added the link to the closed auction. I think the serial is under the grips. I can't remember if the number is readable on the box.

Congrats.
I’ve chased several of these on GB, but they seem to keep going a couple hundred past what I’m willing to pay.
I’m resigning myself to the idea that this is going to be the one that got away. *shrug*
Enjoy!

Will do. I've been lucky in those regards when buying revolvers online. So far all of them have been good to go.

I felt the same way. I finally decided to bite the bullet and get one. Because, let's face it, they aren't getting any cheaper.

I just got through cleaning/lubing and inspecting the piece and man oh man, she is a nice lttle minty one! Nice and tight and I couldn't find any evidence of flame-cutting at all. Even my other K-frames show at least a HINT of something. There's powder residue that is hard to get off but that's it. There were clumps of dried up lube here and there, almost like clay, lol. So I'm guessing this piece hasn't been shot in a long time.
All in all, I'd say I'm happy that I gambled the money for this. I'd pay it again in a heartbeat for this condition.
