19-3 matte finish?
The 19-3 I recently bought (and love) has a matte finish that I have never seen in a model 19 before. Any thoughts?

Nickel and Blue from the factory, looks good and should make you a good shooter.

Does not appear to be a factory finish. It could have been refinished in a bead blasted blue or phosphate finish, or possibly a spray coating such as Cerakote. Better quality images would be helpful.

Model 19's should be bright and shiny blue or nickel from the factory

Having issues getting pics on here. If it was refinished then it was done really well as with it disassembled it is completely uniform. Etchings are crisp and factory deep. Very odd. I did see that there were some 19’s issued to the govt with a matte finish but all the ones I found were 2.5”‘s

Looks a lot like the finish on this 648. Not factory but kind of grows on you after awhile.

This is a factory finish that was applied when I had a Combat Package done by S&W.
It is the bead blast blue.

The finish on the 2nd pic looks identical to mine. I took it to a gunsmith yesterday and he was perplexed by the finish. He had seen a few 2.5" 19's with the matte finish but never a 4" and advised that he couldn't see any evidence of it being re-finished and it appears to be a factory finish. Love the gun no matter!

I have several questions that might get to the bottom of the mystery.
Is the gun pinned and recessed?
Does it have a round butt?
Could it possibly be a 19-5 rather than a 19-3?
Thanks.
Bill

Thanks.
S&W did make four inch, round butt, with the same type finish for DSS and possibly for NIS (now NCIS), but they were dash 5's.
Yours is obviously not one of those. Don't know until you ask.

I have a 2 1/2" RB 19-5 that shipped to the State Department with the "bead blast blue" as you mentioned. It looked so unusual that I sent for a letter. I have posted pictures of it in the past. Same gun/grips (DSS) as noted above.

It could be a factory finish.
I have a model 15-3 with a similar finish that looks perfect; the lettering is too good to have been re-blued. I took it to a S&WCA meet a couple of years ago and had Roy Jinks look at it. He couldn't tell for sure, but did say that S&W did many special orders about the time it was made.

If it is a factory bead blasted blue finish, it could have been a special order item. Only way to find out is to pony up $100 and have S&W research it and send you a letter.

At one time, the factory offered a bead blast blue refinish option. Probably the finish on that nice 19-3.
And the factory also made batches of bead blast blue 19-5s and 19-7s for Government/Military sales contracts. Those were RB frames. I sold my 4 inch 19-7 bead blast blue FACTORY finish to a member here. Regards 18DAI

Factory, Rogard, black nitride, it’s hard to say, but it looks nice. I had my 15-2 black nitrided. Looks great and is very durable.
