Default Model 67 Question.

I have a model 67 no dash with the stainless rear sights.

I know it was an early 1972 production due to the sights, but the serial number is 6K26***

That would put it around 74 0r 75 according to the S&W catalog.

What's up with that?

Click the pic and it goes full size.

My M67, #5K632xx, was shipped with the stainless rear sight in June 1974. I also have a M66 with stainless sights that was shipped from S&W in December 1974. I’m sure S&W produced these two models with the stainless sights until they had used up the last stainless sight they had had on hand. They are well known for never wasting any parts on hand but will continue to use the old style part until stocks are exhausted.

OP that’s a very nice example.
Wish mine came with a stainless rear sight. I’ve thought about looking for one.

Thanks,

I read this in the catalog and assumed only the early first year had the rear stainless sights.

I bet there is an old police armourer somewhere with a coffee can full of ss sights. I think the Model 66 was the first stainless revolver with an adjustable rear sight. Apparently they were changed later to improve visibility, thus creating one more story in the S&W history book, .

Are the stainless sight versions worth more or more collectable than the blued sight ones?

Perhaps a little, but only because the stainless sights are associated with early production Models 66 and 67, no-dash. They are not rare, in terms of number of units produced, or availability. Not like early production .357 Magnum N-Frames.

Are you sure you didn't want to show your M67 off, Lol, I would and its interesting that the SS sights garnish a premium due to S&W discontinuing the use of them as a result of owners complaining how they were getting reflection off the sight if that is actually the case in which the SS sights were discontinued. Anyway you slice it a fine revolver.

IIRC The 4" Model 66 was introduced in 1970 along with the 4" Model 64, The model 67 was introduced in 1972, The 66 and 67 both had SS rear sites until around 1975.
The reference you are citing is referring to early first year production guns getting a premium but only because they are first year guns .

On a side note I have never seen a 2.5" or 6" Model 66 with a factory SS rear site.

Also IIRC when they transitioned the 66/67 to the black rear site unit they were actually blackened SS with the letter "S" stamped underneath.

Not trying to show it off at all.

Someone offered me $850 for it, and I was trying to figure out if it was a good deal or not.

I would call that a very fair offer, even with original grips and box. The Model 67 was introduced in 1972, and the s/n dates this one to 1974. Using this as an example, it looks like the stainless sights were used from 1970 (on the first Model 66), to at least 1974, on the M-67.

My Model 67 dates to 1972, and reading the same information posted above, I had assumed they were only used on the first year of production. This made some sense, because the same source, SCSW IV, also said that they were used for about the first 18 months on the 66. Beyond what I read, I did not research it much further.

My 67 no dash supposedly shipped in 1973. Stainless sights. Serial# 5K193xx. Since Smith did not ship out guns in special order, you just don't know! Nice gun and photo! Bob

I think mine is a first year Model 67...serial number is 3K79xxx

It has stainless sights and Magnas numbered to the frame. The stainless sights are great for a black bullseye target.
