I was just re-reading a John Malloy article on .45 ACP revolvers in the 1987 Gun Digest today. Evidently the other two 8 & 3/8" are serial numbers 25 and 2500; at least that was the case at the time he wrote the article.

Pete...The ampersand on this revolver was used 71-72. It is a little smaller than the ampersands used before it and was replaced in 1973 by the upright ampersand.

I checked and the ampersand on my 1972 4" 29 matches that one also. Very interesting information. A beautiful piece you have!
