Would you pay $1000 for a like N.I.B. 17-1? Update.
1960-1961 production. Appears to be only factory fired. All paperwork, tools, original box. Thanks for any input.
Well, after all the wonderful input I went in today to buy the 17-1. It turns out the actual price is $1295 and it isn't the original box. The revolver is in 100% condition. Only factory fired but between the price increase, the incorrect box and the fact that I already have a nice K 22 from 1947 I decided to pass on it. Saving the money for a Model 27, 5 inch.

For a California buyer and a revolver available in California, probably.

If you can afford it, and want it, why not? They are the Cadillac of 22 revolvers. Folks have spent less for that kind of package, and folks have spent more. If it is available locally and you can personally inspect it, that is a plus.

Yes, immediately. When was the last time you saw a 17-1 for sale, much less one LNIB with all the goodies? I've never seen one locally for sale and it is the only dash number I don't have for a 17. An 8 3/8 with box sold on GB in February for $1250. Good luck. If you don't want it please let me know where it is.

I'd be all over it. If you'd pay $850 for it, why wouldn't you pay $1K? That package would be VERY difficult to duplicate, and the price is not out of line. Most of the collectors I know would recognize it for what it is.

I would, and did, spend more for a nice K 22 recently, not LNIB.
So, yes.

Mr. good, go for it if it does not hurt the budget. Sounds like a nice 60 year
old gun, with all the goodies.

They don’t come up that often. If you want it and can afford it, go for it. I have a 17-1 that I would not take $1000 for!

You better jump on it quick!
If it is a true stamped Model 17-1 they are very scarce as they were only made for 1 to 1-1/2 years. The dash 1 Engineering change was in 1959 to change the extractor rod thread from right to left hand, and the dash 2 came along in 1961 so not many true dash 1's got cranked out.
The 98% and higher Model 17-3's are going for $800 to $900 in central Virginia, and personally I and my local friends haven't even seen a shooter grade, semi whipped for sale in the last year or so.
Now with ammo shortages driving some to shooting 22's just to stay in tune....I guarantee you for $1k it would NOT last getting from the back room to the display case...an employee would grab it for sure.
I thought I overpaid years back for my Model 17-3 but as all forum members know........I didn't really "overpay"...I just bought it a tad early.

I think $1000 is a little high but any high condition S&W built before 1975 is going to appreciate from here on. Also it's a desirable model so even if you pay a little too much now it won't be long before it will be worth what you paid for it now. I paid too much for a 19-3 about 5 years ago but it's easily worth more than I paid for it. Plus I've shot it some so I've enjoyed it while I've owned it. Those don't come along very often in that condition. Just my 2 cents.

As quick as I could push the buy it now button!!! Even quicker if it was in person. You almost never see a 17-1 for sale. As One who collects the K-22s of all eras, I have no 17-1s in my collection, and not because I have not looked...
Good luck and show us some photos when you bring it home.
All the best,

If I could afford it, without a doubt. Actually, I think that's a steal. The seller could get more than $1,000. Easily.

I think you have to really want a gun to pay $1000 or more in the first place. That's not a price for a throw-it-in-the-glovebox beater.
As for all the folks that say "no way," well, no problem - It probably ain't for you, anyway. It sure ain't for me.
And here's the thing: especially with older, well-kept firearms with all the goodies that a collector might want, those represent the top of the top condition guns anyway. It's a seller's market when you get up in the stratosphere of even slightly-rare guns. If OP's seller wants that much, that's up to him. I'm willing to bet that sellers up there could care less if the bulk of accumulators like me or even known collectors of fine firearms won't take a second look - all he needs is one buyer.
Just a few rambling thoughts on a quiet Sunday evening.

I would pay that if I wanted it. Several years ago I bought a 66-2 3" barrel for $1200. Back then that was on the higher end but was not a fall-down-fainting high price. It was something I wanted to keep for myself, not a "flip it for $100 profit" revolver. So I say go for it if it's one you want for yourself and not to sell for a profit.

Yes, definitely. I sold a dash 1 three years ago with a box and like new condition for $1000. And regret it, the dash 1s are very rare and don't come around very often.

Not to hijack the thread but I would think that a four screw K22 (pre marked model 17) would be just as rare as they dropped the 5th screw around 1956 and began numbering the revolvers in 1957

Over the last year or two full package revolvers, Smith and Colt, have jumped up in value. In some cases a lot. As G-Mac said the seller could get more than $1000 for the gun and package without much effort. For a full package -1 LNIB better get it now.

If you want it -- get it!! Remorse never goes away -- only gets worse. If you don't like it after you bought it -- you can always sell it. But you have to own it first.... MY SUGGESTION-- buy it!!

I would not because I already did. I paid more, quite a bit more, for one in the same condition only because it was shipped 39 days before I was born.
The -1 versions of the '50's era guns, 17, 18, 15, 14, 27, 29, 19, always seem to sell for more. There is only one confirmed 28-1 and no confirmed 16-1.

You may well be correct. Don't know that I've ever considered that some pre-17s were four screw. I have three of the five screw variety and a couple four screw no dash. Didn't even realize there was a missing "slot" in the collection. Now you've got me looking for another one when I thought all I needed was a 17-1. Thanks, I think, for expanding my horizon and putting another "need" on the list.

If I was near death with tons of money, yes. I am not and I have not. When golf clubs are restricted to use with helmets and waiting periods, will their value increase?

I'm a shooter....
...not a collector so I wouldn't be interested. But I'll bet that there are people out there that ARE interested in such a nice package. I'd put it on Gunbroker for $999 or $900 with a reserve of a thou and see how the bids go.

Paying $150 or $200 more than I would like to on a gun used to bother me until I thought about all the times I took my wife out to a $200 dinner that was gone the next morning (and sometimes even that night). Puts things in perspective.

Well, that's different. A gun can't cook or keep you warm on a winters night.

Back in the early 90s I overpaid for my 67 no dash unfired in the box with papers and cleaning kit for $210.
Today as stated I didn’t overpay I just bought it early.

True. But both make a lot of loud noise. At least guns don’t care if you wear ear muffs.

There is a big flip-side to that coin, too.

1000.00 isn't bad, you will pay about 800.00 for a new 617 and it will certainly have something wrong with it that S&W may or not repair on warranty so 1000.00 may be a bargain for an old like new 17.

Thanks, I think, for expanding my horizon and putting another "need" on the list.

And before someone says that there are no 4 screw K22's please do not tell that to the little guy sitting in my safe
