My favorite is actually a K 15-5 that I've owned since 1980. I wore the cylinder out and that was easily replaced and tuned by me. As to the person using 38 SPCL in the model 28, since most never use the 28's with .357 ammo, why not stay with the 38 SPCL?
The 257 gives you a much broader selection of cartridges. 38 Wadcutters for Practice. 357 for serious use.

I do not currently own a Mod 27, though I have owned a few in the past. The only thing that made me interested in the Mod. 27 at all were the 3.5 and 5 inch barrels. I was always of the thought that if you want an N frame .357 with a 4 or 6 inch barrel, go buy a Mod. 28.

I do think S&W screwed up by making the 3.5 inch Mod.27s square butt frames, should have made them round butt. The 5 inch Mod. 27s are darn near perfect for belt carry. I keep kicking around the idea of getting another one.
