Default Model 29 help

I need help with info on the model 29. I will be looking at 1 that is coming on the market due to unfortunate circumstances. I check the forum a lot but didn't pay too much attention to 29's as I never thought I would have a shot at one. So, i would like your best estimates, in a general sense. Hvent seen it, don't know which dash it is, if nit has any extras, but I will probably only get 1 shot at it, so any advice( other than sell the house and get the gun) bearing in mind its from a private owner. I'll check for hammer push off and timing and do the number of screws affect the value. I have till Tuesday to get smarter, thanks in advance and wish me luck.

Wow, not much info to go on there.
"do the number of screws affect the value" - Certainly, along with condition, stocks, barrel length, box, extras, etc.
I know I'm not helping much but like I said, not much info to go on.

With the information provided, I'd say $1000-$5000. Too many variables.

The most expensive are 29s or 29-2s; expect to pay $1200 to $1400 today for those in really good shape. These models are 'pinned andcrecessed,' meaning there is a pin through the barrel and topstrap and the chambers are recessed for cartridge trims. 29-3s (starting in the early 80s) are usually $200-$400 less and are not pinned and recessed. They are great shooters.

Condition is paramount. I wouldn’t worry about push off as that is very unlikely on a well conditioned gun. The amount of screws is a big deal. The proper grips are a big deal. The box and accessories are a big deal. Just too little information to make an educated guess.

Vague answer:
Let's presume good condition:

5 screw or 4 screw frame with correct stocks - $2500+. Coke grips, correct box or presentation case, will increase price quickly.

29-1 - I won't even guess!!! Very few made and very rare!

29-2 and later- Generally under $2000, depending on if its pinned and recessed or later.

Lots of other factors affect prices--shorter barrels seems to bring a premium. On the earlier guns, condition from 90% to 95% will make a major difference in price.

That's about as vague as I can be and maybe give you a little info.

and dont forget the rule: A high priced gun you pass on today is tomorrows bargain. On the G.I. site,I have seen 29s price increase 40% in the last year for a nice 2nd change. Crazy

Value will depend upon overall condition of the revolver, which sub-variant it happens to be, barrel length, blue or nickel plated, original finish or refinished, any modifications or aftermarket changes, and any extras such as original box, documents, and tools.

Sledvet77, A lot of good information already given. The only thing I would add; is it a "shooter grade" with after market grips or a P&R (no lock) all original LNIB 3 burn-ring gun? That will make a big difference in price. Check all numbers to see if they match and defiantly remove the grips and check for rust and or pitting.

Default Some pics of what to look for

OP: Generally in todays market ANY S&W N Frame is approaching $1000 in even less than stellar condition. From what I've observed the last year and a half most 95% to 98% top condition are $1,200 and up...and that's local sales...not GB or GI or other Inet brokers where you pay bidders premium, tax, shipping and insurance on top of your winning bid.

My 44 Mag, Model 29-2 is a 98% condition, gun only and mine came with wooden presentation case and original tools and documents, however the blue case flocking had long turned to dust (as most of them you find). I have an insured value of $1,600 on this "package" and I'm reasonably sure if it were for sale....I could probably realize that amount, or a tad less.

Anyway....If you do find that the one you are looking at is a Model 29-2, then see the pics below for what you should see (the barrel pin, Target grips, red ramp front, and white outline rear sights, hammer and trigger, etc.). I have a factory Letter on mine and it shipped December 31, 1980 so the case is correct with gun pointing to the right.

Again........no matter what you will be looking at, $1000 is probably a starting point for N Frame Smith & Wesson these days.

Please come back and let us know what you found and how it was (is) priced....and if you do get it....post photos please.

Default good info

Thanks everyone for the info, just wanted to have my head in the game when I see it, but I'll probably be foaming at the mouth and mumbling incoherently. I thought that $1000 would be a good starting point if everything looked ok. I have a 66-2 so im familiar with the basics of Smithys. I will be sure to get back with pictures if i am lucky enough to adopt it and if I read correctly even up to the 29-5 or 6 should be a good shooter. I dont like the internal lock or funky metal parts of the -7. Thanks and stay safe

Model 29-2 ---I`ve seen nice examples pushing $2500 recently Model 29-3 --- If you find one under $1300 grab it. Many now are 1500
Practically any price you pay today will be a bargain next year

Hold the phone here. " coming on the market" how? A widow you know? Is this something you can go see? Can you say I want to snap a couple pictures? Then post them here?

Did you know the person that owned it? Do you know when he bought it? Bought it new? what year roughly?

Do you have any idea of condition?

Most likely you are going to be coming up against a 29-2. assuming 95% plus condition 4" 13-1400, 6"1200-1250, 8 3/8" bbl 900-1000. with cardboard box and tools add 100.00 , with wood box add 200-250.

If it is a 29-2, and has rubber grips somebody robbed a 150 dollar pair of grips. If it has rubber, pull them and look for rust on the frame.

If it has rust, corrosion, pitting you need to make a determination what you can live with. If it has deep rust and pitting , go home. If it has VERY light surface rust most of that can be cleaned off( NO STEEL WOOL) come back to us for a " how to " lesson.

Good luck

Sorry to keep everyone waiting, but ran into a snag. hes a fellow vet and ran into complications so I am giving him space and waiting until he is up to showing his guns. i believe they will be 99% and he is selling them to his VFW brothers so I feel i am lucky to have a chance at owning 1 of them. I believe he will need at least 3 weeks, so i will be patient. I have only been a pistol owner for 3 yrs, but I try to read all the posts just to fill my head if I come across a good deal. I lost a few good buys because I went home and researched for a few days and POOF it was gone. I am extremelly fortunate to have grabbed a 66-2 stainless snub for 300 and a 439 for 265, so I guess a have a little luck...I love that 66-2!....keep watching and ill get back in a couple weeks....thanks for all the good info...........squirls b crazy
