Default M57 wood grain Boxed set - 1965

A recent acquisition:
A stone mint (with just a hint of a cylinder line) model 57 - probably from 1965 - since it came in a perfect condition wood grain box. SN S255xxx
Enjoy!

Very nice! I have one from 1964 but sadly without the box/etc. Great find.

Default M57 Set

You have a very nice 6" M57, and in the box with tools. Quite hard to find these days. Here is my set of early .41 mags, all 1964 to 1967. I also made the box, as non of my guns had the correct factory boxes.

Beautiful gun...

I have never seen a latch like that on a S&W PC...or one quite so narrow....

Default Very Nice M-57, with tools, valbehaved

This is not to be critical but I am unsure about the presentation case concerning the originality, it appears to be a dark wood grain paper maybe adhered to an original presentation case made of mahogany. I have never seen a factory produced presentation case made from wood that dark. Custom, yes. I may be wrong so please correct me if I am.

It is my understating that very few of presentation boxes were made for the guns that shipped in 1965 that had been finished with wood grain paper instead of the standard wood finish. These cases also had completely different latches and hardware.I have seen similar boxes posted on the forum in the past, but apparently they are uncommon.

100% original and the nicest one I have ever seen. I can’t imagine that more than 100 of these cases exist. I have seen around 20 of these over the years.

Very nice indeed! I have the same item- S256XXX- not quite as nice as yours, but close.
I've talked to several known S&W gurus, but none seem to know exactly why the odd boxes.

The origin of the unusual presentation cases for the Model 57 is unknown. Some speculate they were samples provided as an alternative to the mahogany cases and shipped with a few guns. That explanation seems as good as any.

To the OP, congratulations! I have a nickel, 6” in the S253xxx range with the same case. If you remove the top insert it should have a number written in black marker. Mine is #166. I’ve seen another member post #145. Does that mean there were at least 166 of these cases made? No idea.

I have just the case in my collection and the number inside the top is #324. There may be more of these than we think!.........?
