Default New to me 629 ND

Just pick-up a 629 no dash. Beautiful gun. I understand the no dash is relatively rare being the only 629 pinned&recessed. A couples questions, how many no dasher were made and can you tell me the shipped date? Ser # N8723##. It also came with a wood box, not a fitted box, is this correct for this gun? I read the early 629s were shipped in a wood box.
Thx.

Default Model 629

I'm guessing late 1981 for the year. That looks like a correct box but it should have blue inserts formed to the shape of the gun. The inserts were originally covered with a blue felt-like material. However, inserts that old the material would be degraded by now. Looks like maybe that is what happened to yours and someone decided to just put foam in the case instead of having the inserts re-flocked.

I'm not sure about the production numbers. When introduced in 1979 they only made them with 6 inch barrels. The 4 and 8 3/8 inch barrels came along in 1981 I believe. The 629-1 was brought out in 1982 so not very many 4 or 8 3/8 inch barrels out there.

I have a 4 inch (N866129) which shipped in September 1981. Yours is probably late 1981 but you'll need a letter for a ship date and location to which shipped. Or, if you join the SWCA, the good Dr. Jinks will give you a month and year shipped just for being a member. Another benefit of SWCA membership. Nice gun, enjoy.
