19-2 needs work but I took it home
Bought this today for $675. It needs some work the Cylinder is tough to open but the action /trigger is very nice. I had a 19-5 this trigger is much nicer. It needs to be opened up and cleaned and I will see how it goes from there. looking for help on year of manufacture. and value. As the finish is rough I'm thinking of re-bluing. I know that will not help the value but if it cleans up nice I will be keeping it and I have a local guy that does a great job with smiths he hot blued a model 36 that was in bad shape and it looks great.
19-2

Nowadays, a functional M19-2 2 1/2” is worth the price you paid.

I sold a 19-5 with a 4 inch that was in better shape for $750 a few months back I though this would be worth more being pined and recessed and having a 2.5 inch barrel. maybe not a lot more but ...

I'd clean her up good, get it running perfectly, then shoot it some before thinking about the finish....P&R short barrels are hot right now

Give it a complete tear down, soaking and scrubbing in acetone,
re-cleaning with brake parts cleaner and then a scrubbing in a good
lube and let us know what she looks like and how she handles.

Good deal! If you have a guy you trust, then heck yeah, get it refinished. Just don't go and sell it, they don't make them like that any more.

There are times when a revolver that has seen better days just speaks to me. I have bought more than one like that. Projects can be fun and frustrating and totally rewarding. Enjoy yours.

cleaned it up and put new grips on her and it looks a little better but the cylinder still gets hung up when you try and open it. I checked the ejector rod all looks good and seats well but 98% of the time it needs to be bumped hard to get it open the other 2% it opens but still hard to get it to do so. the action and trigger is so nice on it I don't care how it looks its a keeper. I have to solve the cylinder issue but I will very happy with it once that is taken care of.

Not sure what that one would go for but really nice ones are bringing well over 1k on gunbroker pretty regular so I think you did okay. If it cleans up nice and works like it should I think you did real good.

The ejector rod might just need a bit of stone work where it locks into the barrel locking lug. I have a Terrier that exhibited the same symptoms. I looked at everything rod tight no crud under star. I then started comparing it to my model 36 the clearance on my rod to lug was a bit more on the 36. Just a bit of stone work cured the sticky opening.

I would say you did OK. I have seen folks pay more for 2.5" Ks in worse shape. A clean bill of health with the gunsmith and a new finish on her and you have a very desirable and useful piece.

Is the ejector rod twisted tight? I have seen that cause the cylinder to lock.

Check your Smith for endshake--basically does the cylinder move back and forth a bit while closed? Does the cylinder open "easier" if you push it back a bit first? If so, you may need an endshake shim or two.
I bought a well used 17-3 that at first I had to rap the cylinder smartly with the palm of my hand to get it to open. One .002 shim from Power (I think? Its been a few years, lol) and it opens and closes properly. Since we like pictures (btw, nice looking Smith and CZ you have there):

So it turns out the end of the ejector rod where it contacts the locking bolt had a burr from use over the years or??. Burr removed and the cylinder now opens and closes perfectly.
thanks to Merl67 for his suggestion to check the end of the ejector rod. It was not the exact issue but it was close.
Glad I took the risk as I wanted a 19 2.5 inch but was not going to pay the online prices. I decided to not refinish (at least for now) as the honest wear is not a bad thing

Glad you got your problem solved. Normally, you may get more results on S&W smithing section. I would have bought it too! Before prices went crazy, gave $725 for my 66-2 snub. They were asking $795. Think I like my 10-5, 2" the most! Bob

2" & 2 1/2" K Frames have been and will continue to be hot items. They have always been favorites of mine. Since you plan to keep and shoot it, I wouldn't hesitate to re-blue, especially since you have a local person that you have been pleased with doing the work. I'm thinking you will be able to recover the cost plus your purchase price in a few years at the prices these are bringing.
This is a 19-4 that had had some moisture surface damage and then redone with a Metaloy finish (Industrial hard chrome). It sold well above the costs of purchase and refinishing, after more than 15 years of use. That finish wears like iron, I also have a 1911 that is now over 30 years since it was done and still looks great.

Your 19-2 came out great. It is amazing what one can do sometimes.
My 19-3 was a little rough when I got it. Like you, a little TLC can make them look real good. Mine had a little rust and dries goop everywhere, but after the clean up, a couple of new springs it came out real good.

It has potential. I'll bet the action is slick.
I can see that gun in Nickle with a red ramp front sight and a white inlay rear.

Green,
A little time and effort and figuring out your problem and you've got a really nice shooter! I have a 19-5 like yours that would hang up when one cylinder was aligned and all it was was a tiny bur on the end of the ejector rod in the right place. A little bit of truing on the rod end and all was good! I like yours the way it looks now. Well done!

If those are the original grips (numbered to the frame) keep them tucked away, but treat the old warrior to a better looking pair of shoes to match the new Sunday-go-to-meeting suit... ...Ben

I have a Model 10 and a Model 64 that had that little burr that made opening the cylinder sticky. A little twist with a drill bit in the end of the rod and opens perfectly now.
