Crown Jewel of My PD Collection
Howdy ladies and gentlemen,
I just picked up this little gem from my FFL. I found it for sale at Morphy's Auction House.
It is a S&W 29-2 that was used by the Louisville PD. From the research I've done here (thanks for posting everyone who knew the history on them) these guns were issued to members of the SWAT team and higher-ranking personnel.
I've been after one of these for 4 years and I'm ecstatic to finally have one.
Couldn't find any 44 special ammo locally, hopefully I can find some at a gun show this weekend

That is quite a find. Some time back, I got two Remington 870 receivers with that same stamp. I enjoy any agency/department marked firearm.
Do you know if the 29-2s were carried and used on the job, or were they more of retirement gift or something?

My own PD collection is quite small. I have:
A S&W 5946 used by Garden City PD in New York
A S&W 5946 used by an NYPD officer
A Ruger Police Service Six used by an NYPD officer. This was part of the last class to get the blued guns with spurred hammers.
A post war S&W M&P .38 purchased by a NYPD patrolman in 1946. That patrolman went on to use this gun in a shootout with 4 perps. He was awarded the Medal for Valor for the gun fight. I have the newspaper clippings of him being awarded the medal by the mayor. He got into this shootout in the same precinct I would work in 47 years later. It is my most valued firearm.
I’d really like a Model 29 one day.

Louisville sure came up with a nice frame stamp. What marking does the Louisville Model 10 have which you list in your collection?
Here’s one on a Victory from June 1945:

As far as I know, no state police or highway patrol issued a Model 19 with agency markings.
If someone knows more please chime in

Thank you sir. I am happy that I've been able to build it steadily over the last 6 or 7 years.
I've been compiling a list of the ones I need and it is over 30. I hope by the end of this decade it will be complete

Thank you for your service sir. NYPD sidearms are really cool. I have a Model 10 that was issued to the Transit Police. I have yet to find out which officer it was issued to.

Oh wow. That is an early one. I'm adding one to my list.
The Model 10-6 from the Louisville PD that I have is stamped the same way as the Model 29. That Model 10 has the most carry wear out of any handgun that I have. It must have been on the streets for 20 or more years

The GA State Patrol issued a Model 19 4”. Was my brothers duty weapon before transitioning to Model 5903 9mm in the early 80’s.

There were 400 Victorys in that shipment from June 6, 1945, addressed to Chief Kimberling. So there should be survivors around. I have found eight full or partial serial numbers besides mine searching various forums.
For a rarer gun, look for one of 25 Colt Commandos with 2” barrels that Kimberling also ordered about the same time, which have the same stamping. I’ve only encountered one.
In total, more guns than the whole department had officers at the time. I once talked to someone from the Louisville Metro Public Safety Museum about that; they had no idea what the chief wanted with all those revolvers, but had no records. He must have just stocked up.

The Georgia State Patrol issued the Model 66 between the 19 and the adoption of the 5900 series. I believe they also issued the 686, but it was in limited quantities.
Does he have either of those?

Wow! Thanks for relaying all of this information. I doubt I'll ever be able to find one of those Colt Commandos. It would be the find of a lifetime!
One of those victories would be a nice addition to the collection.
Maybe the Chief ordered all of those revolvers because he was an enthusiastic like us haha

Police Department Guns.
I have been collecting guns for years and the only 2 PD guns that I have, with the exception of my own handguns is a model 73 Winchester in 44-40 cal that was owned by the Reading Coal & Iron police, that was purchased by them in 1889 and a model 37 Ithica shotgun that was owned by the Colwyn, PA pd. You have a really nice collection according to what you have listed.

Here is the link, on kbm6893's behalf:
R.M Vivas is THE MAN! Unbelieavable History of My NYPD Guns!! **PICS ADDED**
By the way, do you have any NY-1 stamped guns? They are still (somewhat) common and easy to find.

very nice...
I see you have a Rhode Island State Police S&W 10....RISP also were issued the first S&W mod 66's with a 6in barrel with a lanyard loop.
sn was RISP and their badge number....they kept these for about a yr and were then issued a regular production serial number....Troopers could buy their RISP badge number gun for I think it $150 at the time.
Enjoy the hunt Al

Here's a rather uncommon PD marked gun. Of the five department rifles I got to look at, this was the only one marked. It's a Marlin lever gun in 35 Remington and is from the metro Atlanta area.

You have a really nice collection according to what you have listed.

Thank you for your service sir and your kind words. Those two guns you have are like jewels. Can you post a picture of the rifle?

I don't have any other PD guns from NY. I would like a Ruger Security Six, Ruger SP 101, Sig P226, S&W 5946, and a 64 NY Model

sn was RISP and their badge number....they kept these for about a yr and were then issued a regular production serial number....Troopers could buy their RISP badge number gun for I think it $150 at the time.
Enjoy the hunt Al

I was under the impression that the RISP Model 66's were never issued. Do you know for sure they were carried?
I've only seen two for sale and lost both auctions. Third time is the charm they say

Wow do you know when that was issued and to whom?

There’s a beat up NYPD 5946 right now on gunbroker. Price is pretty cheap. There’s also a Ruger SPNY that is an NYPD gun. And a SIG 226 that is pricey. It was part of the trial program and marked as such. The job never issued the Security Six. Just the Speed Six and Service Six. The stainless DAO revolvers had markings to indicate they were NYPD guns. In the case of the Rugers, a star in the crane. When the Six guns were no longer authorized, the SP101 was marked SPNY and the GP100 was marked GPNY.

Based on the serial number the gun was built in 1983. I don't know who it was issued to, but the department had it scoped prior to them selling it off.

I'm actually bidding on the trial Sig. Thanks for the corrections on the Rugers. I'm bidding on a SP 101 SPNY DAO. It is not as pretty as a Smith, but it is built like a tank

Thanks. I'm adding the GPS S&W 19 to my list. Was the 28 marked to?

I believe I bought it around two years ago. Our local GT Distributor's was forced to take the sheriff department's lever guns when GT's purchased all their confiscated firearms.

It is. I carried the SPNY. Sold it for $200. Stupid., but that's what they were going for about 8 years ago. There was a gun shop near 1 Police Plaza that used to buy the guns from retiring cops. He had milk crates full of them and you could just pick. Going rate for a Model 10 was $100. Model 36 was $150. The stainless DAO revolvers were less than that. I should have bought them all. My uncle sold his Model 36 there and used the money to buy drinks for himself and whoever else was at the bar as a retirement present.
RM Vivas, the member who helped me out on my M&P, mentioned in another post that as recently as the later 90's, the Equipment Section had stacks of guns that were never sold. I'm talking new in the box and hard to find guns like the 3" Model 36 that "Police Matrons" used to carry. The asking price was what they paid for them, so $45 a pop. That wasn't widely known or I would have definitely bought quite a few.

Don't ever sell that rifle. It is a cool piece of history. Do you shoot it? I've heard 45-70 makes steel targets ring with authority

We all have guns that we regret selling. I wish I had kept my Colt Python, M1 Carbine, AK 74, and Browning Hi Power. But we live and learn.
I would have bought a truck load of pistols at that price haha. I hope they all made their way to good homes
