Default new to me 28-2

This is a nice 4 inch but has pachmeyer grips. Which grips are correct? The "magna" grips and are they anything special? or can I just get any nice set to bring back to correct.

Also what year and yeah paying $800 I think is fair.
Thanks to all

The earliest Model 28-2 would have shipped with diamond Magna stocks as standard. If your Highway Patrolman has an N prefix serial number, the standard stocks would have been non-diamond Magna, certainly NOT Pachmayr grips. Here is a picture of a Model 28-2 from the mid-1970s, wearing its factory original non-diamond Magna stocks.

Target stocks were an extra cost option on the Highway Patrolman. The vast majority of 4" HPs shipped with Magna stocks.

The -2 had a long run, from about 1962 to 1982. So that narrows it down to about twenty years.

Bruce,
As already mentioned, the Model 28 typically shipped with magnas, but targets may fit your hand better. (I personally would never put Pachmyers on a Highway Patrolman… but, it’s your gun!)

$800 isn't a terrible price especially in today's market, but for that price you should have gotten factory stocks. You'll pay $100 or more for period-correct Walnut or Goncalo Alves wood. Let's see the SN (letter and first three digits if you don't want to post the whole thing), and the production year can be narrowed significantly. A letter to SWHF can pin the date it was shipped and who it was shipped to. And we need some pictures!!
Every S&W owner should have a M28, wonderful revolvers.

Thanks everyone is still in Jail, serial is N579xxx (think 1978 or so?) in real nice shape but has packmyers and yeah I do not like them I have a set of targets in the safe somewhere they fit my hands much better.

This shop allows lay away so is a easy sell for me a few $100 each pay day not much pain.

So I will look for some NON diamond magna's at next show for fun.

N550,001 – N580,000….. 1979
N580,001 – N790,000…...1980

I would say yours being N579XXX, it sure would fall into the 1979 time frame.

Do you like the magnas on a gun? I find them to be damn near unshootable without some sort of grip adapter. I was happy as hell my 28 came with the optional targets.

Thanks for the date Jason. I would buy magna's as a correct grip but if they came with targets and there is no way to tell other than a letter (do they still do that) I will put on targets.

You can still letter a gun. Target grips were an option that could be ordered on the gun. I have no idea on the number of guns that were actually ordered that way, but I'd say chances are probably in the high 90 percentile that most would have come with magnas. If you have a box with label, that would tell you.

My gun is a 6" gun, so that may have been one more than likely to have the targets opted for. At this point, it comes down to what you like on a gun.

There are aftermarket stocks that work great also. The MAIN thing is that stocks feel right in your hand. I NEVER shoot with magna stocks. Some kind of target stocks are all I use, but that is what works for me. Wish that I had a 4" 28! Do have a 6" no dash from 1960. Bob

I thought so !
My local FFL who took delivery of the gun, said he thought it was un-fired and has 100% finish . I'm a happy camper !

Pachmayrs are not "correct" but they provide a lot of shooting comfort.

Congrats on the gun. I'm not a fan of the Magna grips at all. Almost anything bigger is better. I think they are challenged in the looks department, too. I keep them only because people seem to want them. Why? I have no idea.

Here's a shot of my 44yr old virgin M28. I acquired it a while ago, and never had the desire to shoot it. I'll let my Son decide weather to fire it when he inherits my Collection.

Take her out and shoot her.

A new in the box gun with zero wear is an unloved gun.
Do the shooting with your boy, and make it a heirloom piece.
