A Gifted model 48-3
One day sitting around our Sunday family dinner we (me and the father in law) were telling stories from the good ol days, "what happened to them?" we say to each other.
He tells me this story of a dog loose in his neighborhood an Akita, about 1980 something. The dog was actively after some lady and her smaller dog, he tells me he goes and gets this .22 he had and pursues this dog (mind you the gun is unloaded). He tells me he's yelling and screaming at this dog trying to get it distracted from the little dog the lady had and boy did he get his wish hahah. The dog took off after him as he turned and high tailed it the other direction, trying to load this revolver, the fastest he ever ran outside of Nam he said. Dog got distracted and ran out of the neighborhood never to be seen again.
We chatted back n forth a bit more about this, then I asked what kinda gun it was.... He replied some kinda S&W, "still got it"! Of course I say let's see it...
He goes and gets the gun brings it to me, I've never seen one like it before, not in my realm of S&W revos I collect or have an interest in. (I've posted about it before but remember after the fact.)
A pretty nice revolver didn't know S&W made a .22mag revo... Hes looking at me with this kinda blank stare and says "you like it, its yours, haven't pulled it out since that day". Needless to say I'm struck by kindness in today's world and it really hit me In the feels...
So anyway, anything special I should know about these?
To bad I can reload for them...
I threw some magnas and a Tyler-T on her and it feels great, yet to shoot her tho gotta find some .22mag.

That's the K22 Masterpiece Magnum Rimfire, Model 48, 3rd engineering change (dash-3). The dash-3 was made between 1967 and 1977, yours was made sometime after 1968, because your stocks do not have the diamond around the screw that holds the stocks (grips) in place. The Model 48 was discontinued in 1986. One in excellent condition is worth about $1100, VGC will bring $700+. I have a M48-4, made in 1981.
Edit: you said YOU threw some magnas on it; what did it have on it when you got it?

Those Herretts stocks that were on it are really excellent for shooting along with looking fantastic. You might want to switch back.

Whatever they are I don't care for them, don't fit my hand that well....

What grips belong on the gun ? Diamond magnas?
What are the chances of finding a 22lr cylinder any more?

Nice gun, and dates from 1975. The original stocks would have been like the Magnas in the photo. Not sure who the maker is of the target stocks but they are very attractive. I don't think they are Herretts. But if you like the way your hand fits with Magnas and a Tyler T, that's all that matters.
I have a Model 18-4. Many people say that the .22 WMR isn't as accurate as the .22 LR. That may well be at distances of 50+ yards out of a scoped rifle. But I'm pleased with regular 2" groups at 25 yards with several brands of ammo out of my Model 48-4.

Now I’m stumped…
I’ve never seen a label like that on Herrett’s. I‘m not sure what they are now, but they’re lovely.
These are Herrett Troopers posted by crazyphil… They were all custom made to fit the owners hand based on a tracing, so the sized vary.

Also, if you look closely at the grip screw escutcheon on the OP's grips, the grip screw comes in from the opposite (right hand) side than Herrett's.
They look familiar, I may have owned a set many, many moons ago, I just can't place them.

After looking closer at the OP’s photos, I agree they’re not Troopers. Troopers don’t have the semi thumb-rest on both sides. This is a set of mine, made for huge hands!
They look more like uncheckered Herrett Shooting Star’s.
This set was advertised last year on ebay as Herrett’s and appear to be a dead ringer for the OP’s grips.
It’s possible they were misrepresented. The auction page is long gone and I could only find the one photo. The stamped numbers on the back of the OP’s grips and the label still has me stumped and I don’t know if Herrett always put the screw in from the left side. Whatever they are, they’re very nice!

What are the chances of finding a .22LR cylinder ? What would be a search query in looking for one ? A model 48 .22lr cylinder?

Look for a K-22 cylinder (model 17 or 18). They all use cylinders that are 1.62” long. It may require fitting. Try to find one about the same vintage as your gun, so a 17-3 or 18-3 cylinder would be ideal.

Anything special you should know
Erik, I have a 48-0 and after doing a bunch of reading on this forum the only suggestion is when you take it to range periodically brush out debris from under the ejector star. I have not fired mine yet but from what I've read carbon has a tendency to build up in that area and cause hard ejection. Paul.

Win!! I found a 17/18 cylinder for the gun... let's hope it drops in, if not who should I send it to? I was thinking 10ring but if someone has another suggestion I'm open....

I like your 48-0, beautiful piece, sir. Do you mind if I inquire about the stocks? Are those original unrelieved target stocks? What year was your 48-0 born and did it come with those stocks?
The reason I ask, I just bought the 17-2 in the attached photo, dated 1965 (still waiting for delivery) and it has the unrelieved targets stocks, no serial number on them. From the information I got from other members here these stocks were not factory installed on K frames after sometime in the mid fifties. I don't have any history on my 17-2 so it's a mystery when and who put them on.

Well my 48 was shipped in 1961 it is a late no dash. Unfortunately it didn't ship with the non relief targets. It was supposed to have shipped with magnas. I found this out as I sent for a letter. I like the historical value of them even if sometime they may contain unexpected information. I belong the the S&WCA and asked about the non reliefs and this is what I found out... those stocks were only made for a couple of years before they were changed to the relief because of the difficulty extracting your shells. They were produced in the early fifties and can be found on some models up to about 1958. I was also informed that S&W used up all their inventory until exhausted so some later 50's guns may have had them put on but only a letter will tell you if it did indeed ship with them. As a side not target stocks generally were not numbered to the gun some were again not often. Fortunately the non reliefs are rare and are worth a bit of $$$. So even though my 48 did not ship with them I'm very happy to have them. As a side note all my knowledge has come from the wonderful members of this forum and I'm happy to pass on what I have learned from them. Hope this helps. Doc

Make sure that the cylinder you are purchasing has the gas ring in the same location as your current cylinder. I found a cylinder from a M17/18 but the gas ring was wrong. Rather than trying to find a correct cylinder I back doored the project and found a correct yoke thanks to a member here. Now all I do when changing from 22BB, CB, Short, Long, LR to 22 WMR/WRF is unscrew the yoke screw and change the yoke/cylinder assembly.
