Nice little piece. I like the grips on it, I may have to try some on my 31.

I bought one like it about three years ago. They are fine shooters.

Congrats on a nice find.
The 3"ers with the lightweight barrel are my favorites.
I'd guess the serial number to be from around the roving J era (1970 - 1973). Is that about right?
Dr. Roy Jinks calls it the “roving J” serial number series: up to five numbers starting at 1J1, with no more than three numbers before the J and from one to four numbers after the J. It had begun by at least May 1970 and presumably ran to 999J99 through 1973, but some in this series didn’t ship till much later. The serial number after 1J9999 was 2J1, and the one after 99J999 was 100J1

That's a good snag for $550 if that's what you paid. 3" J-frames tend to hold their value.

Yes that is what I paid, an older guy that worked there would knock some off the price . I'm may sell a Ruger 22/45 I don't get along with.

One of my favorites. Much easier to shoot well than the two inch guns.
I bought a nickel 36-1 a year or so ago, but it is so pretty I don’t want to shoot it.

The serial number give-away was the ampersand (&) between "SMITH" and "WESSON" on the left side of the barrel. Appears almost as "8c", and that's the only era with that ampersand.
Thanks for sharing the serial number. Based on others in my database it likely shipped between May and December 1971.

I have two and even carry one of them in my cc rotation. They both shoot great and are starting to get a little harder to find with the prices steadily on the rise.

I traded a 2” 36 for this 3” 36. It’s a nice shooter. It’s in my carry rotation. When I got it it had not shot more than a box of ammo. I dry fired it with snap caps and now the actin is nice and smooth. I think it is near perfect condition and is from the floating “J” years. I replaced the wood grips and stashed them away.

That price is a steal for a 3". Don't fancy the grips, had similar on a 60 and it was like a piece of soap in my hands

Took the little to range last Friday and fired 25 rounds Georgia Arms 158gr LRN . It was a little hard to hold onto did better with 130gr FMJ. Kept all my hits inside circle except for couple flyers at 15 -20 ft. I may get a set of panels and BK grip.

I'm confused, who refused the 4473?...it wasn't NICS because they do not receive that information... ...Ben

According to S&W historian Dr. Roy Jinks, the original J-frame serial number series ran from 1 to 786549 in 1969, and the ball 'n' socket changed to fork 'n' pin around s/n 295000 (ca. ~ 1963). He adds that S&W "incorporated" the new standard thumbpiece in February 1966.
