Model 17 and Model 18 revolvers are the bomb at the range. I shoot mine regularly and fortunately, I have a good supply of .22 LR ammo in stock.

I still have a stock .22 Shorts from when I was teaching the kids to shoot, so I shoot that regularly in order to use it up. It's fairly accurate given the long bullet jump to the rifling. As you can see, they shoot a bit low compared to standard velocity .22LR ammo. The target is from 25 yards.

Greyman50,

Other than the “Grips by Goodyear” it looks like you have a real winner there, and if you already have good tires on your car and good sandals, I guess it’s OK to use some rubber for grips too.

I was interested in your mention of Federal Auto Match ammo for your target shooting. Although I’ve heard a few negative comments about it here and elsewhere, that ammo tends to be my go to for my K22, my High Standard target gun, and the 22 rifles I shoot most. It may not be the best ammo for a specific niche, but it seems to do all things pretty well. Your targets would tend to support that.

Regards,
Green Frog

Green Frog, if this was back in 70’s-90’s the x ring would be just a hole, 71 year old eyes , hands and arms give me this,Lol. Took the original grips off the 17 as the Pacs are more comfortable when shooting, its the “arthur” in my hands. Been picking up just about any 22’s( Feds and CCI’s) for target shooting. Walmarts here have been having CCI’s standard velocity in stock regularly even picked up 3 more boxes today, my Supermatic loves them.

I understand the use of the big, rubber grips. Arthritis in the hands can be brutal. Keep in mind that rubber grips are a great place for moisture to collect and then eat away at the frame.

No worry, been “ in the game” a long time. After every trip to range a complete cleaning involves removal of Pacs, wipe down with Kroil ensure no problems.

High Standard target guns for serious and K22 for range fun? We must be brothers from different mothers… I’ll be 73 in June, and other than that attraction to rubber grips, we’re tracking similarly. My arthritis is more noticeable in larger joints though. So far my hands and fingers are just a little weakened and uncomfortable so I still do better with wood. Oddly enough, over 30 years ago I noticed that Pachmayr grips on my Model 29 were worse on my palms than wood! The difference in wear and tear on the supposedly “hard skin” calluses of my palms was striking. Go figure.

Made it to the range today... weather beautiful! Played with my 1948 vintage K22, custom High Standard bullseye gun, recreated 16-3 and 639 Franken-Smith. Remember, a bad day at the range is better than a good day at work. My 90 year old shooting partner and I are so far over the hill that neither of us remembers the bump!

Default Model 17

Love shooting my model 17. I modified the Herrets to be more comfortable for me. The holster is original S&W came with the gun.

Herrett's makes some pretty awesome wooden stocks. The Shooting Star style tends to fit in my hand very well.
