Default Duty Holster

I just purchased a S&W 28-2 4" Highway Patrolman. I am looking for a vintage holster for this gun. I believe the gun is from the mid 70's. I have searched eBay and it is real hard to tell which ones fit the N frame revolvers. Any assistance would be appreciated.

You didn't say which of the two barrel lengths you have. But I carried a Highway Patrolman 4" in a Hunter holster for many years. Very satisfactory. Hunters were not expensive, but they were well made of good leather.

The holster model number is 1100R 12.

I own some 6" HPs but never carried one. However, I do have a Hunter that fits the 6" N frame in one of my holster boxes. If you need one for a 6", I can dig it out and give you the model number.

We used a Safariland thumb break swivel holster. A Safariland Model 25 or model 29 will work, make sure that is says large frame on the back muzzle end of the holster.

I would keep checking on EBay. Search “N Frame Duty Holster” or “N Frame Border Patrol Holster.” I just checked and wouldn’t pay the prices asked now. A nice Don Hume holster will pop up. Good luck!

Most any holster made for a 4” N frame will fit a model 28. In my area of southern Indiana and Southern Illinois basket weave was very popular. Black Basketweave was more popular but brown basketweave was popular with Sheriff’s Departments since many wore brown uniforms.

Safariland, Don Hume, Tex Shoemaker, Jay-Pee, Bucheimer and Bianchi were popular brands in the 60’s,70’s and 80’s.

Smooth Black Leather was popular in the cities like Chicago and NY.

It was common for Officers to carry cross draw or more commonly on their left side. The cross draw holster could be a flap holster or have a safety strap. Clam Shell holsters were in use in the 60’s in California and other jurisdictions. If you ever watch Adam 12 or other police shows like Dragnet you can see common police gear in use.

With longer barreled revolver (5” & 6” N frames) swivel holsters were common. A swivel was attached at the bottom of the belt loop which was attached to the holster body. This permitted the long revolver to rotate the holster body next to your leg while seated.

The use of a thumb strap became popular in the early 70’s. One Police Dept. I worked issued Don Hume border patrol holster with a safety strap that went over the hammer and snap on the side of the holster body. This holster was popular with Bill Jordan, a well known Lawman who once worked for the US Border Patrol. We were issued dual dump pouches where each little pouch carried six cartridges. Cartridge belt loops were common in the 60’s and early 70’s until speed loaders like HKS and Safariland became popular.

Here is a link to a typical high ride smooth black leather large frame revolver holster with safety strap. This holster is from Bianchi but is similar to many duty type holsters sold by other manufacturers of duty belts, holsters and accessories.

Try this link: Search: 10 results found for "*N frame*" – vintagegunleather

They have loads of very cool vintage holsters and assorted accessories…

VASCAR2, carelesslove here !

I bought a new, Don Hume "Jordan" duty holster for my Highway Patrolman in the mid 70's - but never really carried anything in it. It is in very good condition. It is black and has the steel shank below the belt loop.

It fits the description in your post - complete with snap & strap. It has a closed bottom and the "hood" that covers the rear sight.

If you are interested in this old, but near new holster - at $50 + shipping - please let me know and I will send pictures to verify model & condition.

I also have a complete duty rig for a 4" K Frame.

Thanks, Tom "carelesslove" Love

Not vintage in the truest sense, but Ted Blocker still makes drop swivel holsters that are unmatched in their classic look IMO.

Thanks for the offer but I don’t currently own an N Frame. After 35 + years in LE I have several duty belts, holsters and other accessories. If I’d go on a diet I might even be able to wear a couple of my old vintage duty belts.

My favorite police duty holster was the Safariland Model 29. This is a high ride, butt forward thumb break. I liked this style because I could lock my elbow over my sidearm in crowd situations. I have these for K and N frames in 4", 5" and 6"-6 1/2" in black and brown, smooth and basketweave.

The backs of these holsters are stamped "Large Frame" for N frames.
