Default Need help with Model 28 value.

I need some help with the value of a Highway Patrolman.

This morning I traded into a Henry Big Boy in 357. Now, I need a 357 revolver to go with it.

Just a few days ago I purchased a 1911 that I have about $850 in. I don't need the 1911 so, I put it up for trade and was offered a Model 28 Highway Patrolman 4".

I have no clue what the value is on these. I have a model 29 and like it. I was leaning towards picking up an L frame, 586/686, but wanted to see the value of the Model 28.

I only have 2 (poor quality) pics of it. The M28 does not come with the box, papers etc.. but the guy said he has found the original grips for it. I've asked for pics of the grips but am waiting to get them.

Does anybody have a ballpark idea of value?

A 4” 28-2 in 95% or better condition will fetch $750 to $950+, depending on where you live, the 6” will be $150 to $200 less.
You didn’t mention what brand your 1911 is, but assuming it’s SA, Kimber or similar, I’d make that trade in a heartbeat! The market is flooded with $400 to $900 1911s, but you don’t see nice 28-2s as often, especially 4 inchers.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yes, SA.

Do you think the above pics would justify a $850 value on the M28?

At $850 your in the ballpark, I’ve sold two 4” model 28’s within the last couple of months here on the forum for right about that.

That would be about right if the finish is original and 90% or better in my area. From the pic's it looks like it would be in the range of $850 here. They have gone up with all the other S&W's in the last 10 years.

Yup, do it before he changes his mind. The 28 is not made any more, SA 1911's are everywhere. Love to see the grips when you get them together.

Yes. These days, yes. It looks to be in good shape, with no turn line. I would echo the other man that said "Trade"!!!

You can pick up another 1911 in heartbeat. Just for kicks see if guy has original stocks. That would make it even better!

Last year, I paid a local dealer $800 for a 4 inch Model 28-2 (made in 1966-67). Excellent condition with original grips but no box. As a point of reference, i just bought a stainless SW1911 45 auto for $900 from a private party. Like new, with box and papers. I like them both, but would agree with the others and do the trade.

I'd agree with the others on value. What is the SN, do you know? It would help date the gun, although, it is a pinned and recessed gun, so that puts it prior to 1982; it also has the small ampersand between Smith--Wesson, and that one appeared around 1975-76 when the "lazy" one was replaced, so yours is somewhere between about 1975-1982.

I've studied the pictures and it doesn't look like a re-blue to me. All the screws slots look just fine (not mangled) and the pins look as they should. Also little if any finish wear at the muzzle. Many of these rode around in holsters so a finish like that is not often encountered.

I don't think the pictures are bad at all. They seem sharp enough to me. Remember that the original polish and finish were "utilitarian" which resulted in a rather dull appearance.

Since it's wearing Pachs, I would be keen to discover if there is any rust under them on the butt frame.

Assuming no rust, I think it would be a fair trade.

From seeing the pics, and with the numbered stocks I would make that trade NOW!
That's just me though, I love S&W revolvers.

Got it!

I was told it was originally his fathers and passed down to him and it's probably seen 20 rounds between them both.

It looks good to me and i'm happy with it and he's happy with a brand new 1911. Win-Win.

It has a very tight lock up, no play in the cylinder front to back, and the grips appear to have been taken off and set aside early on as they are in excellent shape.

My only other Smith revolver is a 44 mag 6" Model 29 with Target grips and it's a blast to shoot, hardly any recoil. However, these skinny Magna grips seem like they aren't going to be so pleasant... but they look good.

I think that was a pretty even trade. These days, a 4-inch Model 28 in the condition pictured, with original stocks will run $800 to $900.

He can’t be too bright if he traded off his father’s gun. Honor his father by shooting and enjoying the gun. Someday he may realize that he was an idiot and wish he had it back.

1st. of all you have a really NICE 4" 28. Wish I had 1. Do have a 6" no dash shipped 1960. Have correct era Diamond Magna stocks, and Diamond Targets. I am not a magna fan. One that I like on my 28, are Herrett Targets. Work for me. Whatever you do, hang on to the original stocks.

Default Happy traders = always a win-win

Congrats on a fine as-new 28-2. I just sold the one pic'd below to another Forum Member a few weeks ago for $750 so I'd say you did swell. You valued your 1911 at $850, he wanted it and traded for the 28-2 which you are happy with.

I agree..........couldn't be better when everyone is happy.....the real, true, definition of "fair market value".

I have a similar 28-2 4".

It came with the Magnas, but it has a pair of Targets on it now (I still have the Magnas)

It is much nicer to shoot with the Targets on it

PS - Nice gun

I hardly ever shoot a Smith with Magna stocks!! Unless it is someone elses gun, and I'm only shooting a few mild rounds. I have small hands and put Hogues on all my shooting guns, usually rubber ones. However, I have a set of wood Hogues on my 3 1/2 .357 Magnum from 1953 that work pretty well and look much better than the black rubber ones. The Magna stocks are just not shootable for me.

Congratulations on obtaining a very nice Model 28. GOOD TRADE

I made virtually that same trade (my 1911 was a Ruger). The M28 is in excellent condition with no box. I’m still very happy with the revolver and have never regretted the trade. I think it was fair both ways.

Not sure you can use both phrases in the same sentence . If you think the M29 has "hardly any recoil", then you'll not even be able to tell when the M28 goes off, except for the "bang".

Like has already been said, 1911's are all over the place, but M28's aren't made any more. Much as I like 1911's, I sure wouldn't trade a nice S&W revolver for one.

LOL, I'll tell you, I don't know how but the M29 with the Target grips isn't bad, and I was "concerned". Now, I had a Browning B-92 lever action in 44mag, that thing kicked like a mule. I only put 5 rounds through it and it left my arm purple. The steel butt plate didn't help.

Thanks for all the help guys, without the speedy replies this could have gotten away from me. I didn't know what I was looking at and am thankful the 28-2 now lives with me. Much appreciation!

I'm going to try out a T-grip style adapter with the magna grips... I just have to decide on brass or black.

Default Model 28

You did very well!!!! That’s a fine model 28 in beautiful condition. The original grips are VERY nice. Hope you got to keep the very nice Pachmayrs also. I second the BK Grip Adapter. I have several and the fit is great plus they have 4 copper tabs instead of the Tyler 2 tabs to hold in place. I hope to add a 6 inch to my collection at some point. Here is my 4 screw with Ahrends.

M-28s within 200 miles of Austin start at $800 and go up to $1200. Barrel length doesn't seem to matter to much.

As CH4 stated, Tyler #4. But given the current problems and prices regarding tyler, I'd go with BK until I located a tyler. Dont get me wrong, BK's are good, I just prefer metal over BK, Mershon, Pachs, S&W, etc. If BK, with their dual-clip design and customer service were using metal, they'd blow tyler away.
Meantime, pics and range report when you get to it.

Just be advised Tyler has verrrrrrrry slow delivery times. 6-8 mos is not unusual.
Check fleabay.

The price in right for that gun after seeing the second set of pics. You can get that for it fast if you ever want to get rid of it.

I was originally looking at the brass Tyler grips but I do not want to wait up to 6 months for them so I'm looking at BK now.

BK has "black" and "irregular black". I'm assuming "black"
is what I need for the more matte finish on the 28-2?

Does anyone have pics of BK grips on a 28-2 or any N frame with magnas? or could possibly point me towards a pic thread of BK grips if one exists?

Thanks

3 years ago I bought an excellent 28-2 4” in a local gun shop for $425. I sold it a few months later for $750. I’ve forgotten what I did with the money but I haven’t forgotten the gun. I’d have to spend at least $100 more than I sold it for to get it back, which is twice what I paid for it. I miss it.

Nice!

Yes, I got the Pachmayrs too.

I've done a google image search for the BK adapter on a 28-2, just not sure if the images shown are wearing black or irregular black.

Anyway, I'm going to order the Black BK adapter tonight.

Good call. You should have them (BK's) by this time next week if not before...

I think the irregular black may have minor imperfections is all. Someone will correct me if I am mistaken.

Having two sets of tabs means you don't need to sock down the grip screw tight as heck to avoid any wiggle. I found that slipping the adapter on first, but not pushed up tight against the frame, the putting on the grips and then snugging up works best.

You’d like the bronze Tyler T, but you have to be patient. Mine took 15-16 months. Here it is on my 2” 15-3, which I also had black nitrided.

Very nice! Love the bronze.

I ordered the black BK last night, and it's already shipped.

I'm thinking I may go ahead and order a bronze Tyler, too.

Well done sir. If you like your 29 you will love your 28.
About 10 years ago I was looking for a good shooter grade 4". After much looking I picked one up off GB out of a pawn shop in Florida. It was filthy with a slightly tweaked corner on one of the rear sight blade ears. After a good cleaning and a new blade it turned out to be almost perfect with no turn ring. Out of all my bullet lanchers it is my pride and joy. She also came with the nicest set of smooth rosewood targets I've ever had the pleasure of caressing. Alot of people diss the 28 in favor of the 27 but I'll take a working man's gun over a shiney show piece any day of the week.

With only 20 rounds between him and his Dad....... appears very little bonding took place!

Gun probably smells of old socks from 40+ years in a sock drawer!

Nice piece! $700.00? There is one on armlist for $800.00, bin there a couple months.
