There's a Model 10-8 stashed in the cubby hole of my computer desk as I type this.
Marksmanship more than makes up for capacity.

If I had to live the rest of my life with a 38 special I would be fine

Any gun on you, is better than not having one.

I kept a simple model 64 as a desk gun for years and never felt undergunned with it, and the LEO Silvertips I kept loaded in it. Things change. With the world the way it is now, I'd want the highest capacity firearms available to me.

I honestly don't think I would go out the door anymore with a revolver less than .357 magnum if limited to just a revolver. My pocket gun is a 15+1 round 9mm with 147 grain +P HSTs in it, and even then I always carry a full capacity spare mag.

I'd try to save a bit back as you can, and start looking into some sort of LEO trade in gun. Those are usually cheap and fully useable. Like a Glock 17/22, or an M&P.

Hello again. That 3 grain bullseye load is what momma enjoys shooting. I've loaded many of them. But have no desire to load more in the current state of things. Components are very hard to come by in this small town. It's just what she is comfortable shooting. Any idea of velocity out of an old model 10-5? Thanks again. Brian

More than enough for 99.99% of the encounters you could ever expect to have.
I would say goodbye to a heck of a lot of my guns before I parted with a k-frame .38

No idea of the velocity, if your wife's comfort/ability is a factor and she can shoot that combination well, don't fix what isn't broken. If she is willing to carry, I'd say it's time to hunt for another K frame for her, too. (K frames have one more round than the J frame, and are ergonomically easier to shoot well.)

I happen to think a round butt is far better than a square (I mean on the revolver;get your minds out of the gutter, you jerks ) and while a 3" barrel is harder to find and likely to cost more, is better than a 2". It is also just a bit more flexible, depending on carry method and her size (off body carry such as a purse is really sub-optimal and should be avoided if at all possible).

I pulled out my Lyman manual, based on cast lead bullets of 155 (GC LSWC) to 158 grains (LRN) and 3.0 grains of Bullseye, I extrapolated from the published data to estimate 675 to 700 fps. Pretty slow for a 158 grain pill.

K-Frame .38s are great guns. I have a bunch of 'em. Model 10s, 12s, 15s, 64s, 67s, etc..

Top one was my Grandfather's. Can't go wrong with 64s. I have a gaggle of them. Bull barrels, tapered barrels, pinned barrels, snub noses, etc... they are classic guns of a bygone era. They are indestructible since they're K frame .38s and they are a joy to shoot. Simply keep them timed and don't do stupid stuff and they'll outlast you.

The 10-5 is adequate for most situations. What is more important is, "Have you taken time out of your busy schedule to become proficient with it?" Learning to shoot double action well takes some concerted effort.

I recall a story I read about a tourist visiting the NYC Zoo. He accidentally
fell (?) into the polar bear enclosure. The polar bear thought it was his
lunch. An off-duty NYC detective pulled his snub nosed .38 and killed the
polar bear.

Don't forget to replace your carry ammo at least annually.

There was an incident of that nature at the zoo, with a polar bear killed by an NYPD officer with a .38. I thought it was one of their emergency response folks on duty, but maybe not.

You have plenty of answers to make you comfortable with the model 10. All I can add is carry reloads in speed loaders or speed strips. I would be happy with a model 10. If I had the chance to buy one local, I would.

Don't be discouraged. It is easily done if you decide to learn it. Double action revolvers were made to be shot double action. Focus on the sights (or the target, if you are point shooting) and squeeze and don't worry about when the gun goes off. You'd be surprised how good you get after just a box or two of slow, deliberate practice.

It depends upon one's abilities and goals. Today, a lot of handgun owners are happy if they can shoot a group at very close range.

I keep up with what's going on around me and mostly carry a Model 12 snubby filled with 125 gr. Nyclad HPs. I also carry a speedloader full of the same. I don't feel undergunned.
