Default Just picked up my first hand gun. 29-2 and I have a few questions

Hello, I stumbled across a 29-2 today and it has after market grips I don't really like. Does it make a big difference if I get a nice set of wood grips compared to a used set of original grips? Also curious about the year nine was built. Serial number N645520. I think it's around 1970,but was wondering if anyone might know more. Can I contact S &W and get any documentation? Thanks

I find getting a nice set of stocks on there really "makes" the gun. Correct vintage stocks tend to work out well but there are fine aftermarket choices out there as well, it depends largely on what look you are going for.
I will say the Pachmyer and similar, as ugly as they are, do soak up a fair bit of recoil if you are running full-house magnum loads.

In my opinion, you’ll need at least two stocks for your 29. You’ll need a pretty set of factory targets. You can use them for light loads, and of course for “display” purposes. No one really wants to look at a Model 29 with ugly rubber grips. Next, you’ll need the ugly rubber grips of your choice for shooting full-charge magnums.

My choice in the ugly rubber grips category is an OLD version of Pachmayr Presentations. They have changed the shape of them over the years. I don’t care much for the newer versions. Presentations came in two sizes - before they ruined them with the one-piece design shape change. I actually have and like both, but I use the small size most often on a 4-inch gun. If I’m going to shoot an 8-inch gun a lot, I will often use a large size. My hands are “long and thin” enough that both sizes work well for me. If you have “meatier” hands, you’ll probably want the small size. Some guys don’t care for Presentations and prefer Hogues, which is something I’ve never been able to comprehend.

Expect to pay through the nose for a nice set of period correct stocks. Typically $150 to $200. As others have stated, you will want aftermarket stocks for actual shooting, correct factory stocks for display/sale/trading purposes.

If that were my gun, I'd keep an eye in the classifieds here, and snag a set of bigmtnman's stag grips. Wait until he posts a set of "high end" or "dense" grips made from the crown of the antler. Couple that with a Tyler T-grip and it will be like taking a porn star to the high school prom.

I'm a large guy so I'm not too worried about the recoil. I put a pic of the gun up, is it a square butt? Also found another set of #"s kind of below the serial number.

Other numbers are 1X254 and below that is A2. Curious if anyone knows what they pertain too?

Sq. butt. Probably assembly number. Usually the best place to find a serial number on older guns is the bottom of the butt.

The grips on it look like they're great for using to shoot with. Check the For sale section for some proper N Sq. wood grips. You can probably also find a wood case for it if that something that interest you.

Grips are all about preference, aesthetics and function. Sky is the limit depending on your wallet size.
Wood is gorgeous. Rubber is generally more functional.
Depending on your recoil sensitivity get ammo and shoot first. Think about grips after your first outing.
Im not too sure Learning grip technique, stance, sight alignment will be easy with a 29 as a first handgun though.

Pic in post #3, the gun appears to have the old type Pachmayr Presentation grip, small size. I’d consider that good luck, but be careful of them. They have a steel insert and in some cases it may be too close to the inside surface and might scratch the nickel finish. Have a close look at them. Most of the time, this is not a problem. Looks like you have a 6-inch barrel, not a 6.5? Good looking revolver.

The numbers you see on the yoke and face of the butt that match each other are production numbers, to keep parts together during assembly and finishing. The SN will be on the bottom of the butt frame and inside the yoke cut on the frame, and will start with an "S" if the gun was built 1968 or earlier, and an "N" if built after 1968. Your 1979 gun will be a square butt.
