Default The matte finish 19-2 showed up. Opinions?

I posted this awhile back, it took the seller 3 weeks to get it here.

I don't know what to make of it, it looks unused from top to bottom for a gun from 1966 and if it was refinished, I'd like to know how and by whom!

I took a ton of pics which are in the link, please chime in if you like, I really appreciate all the knowledge here.

It's a nice gun either way and was affordable, plus, I like weird guns!

It had tire tread grips on it and I had no idea what was lurking under them until it arrived , I had a really old pair of magnas that fit pretty well.

There is a strange little symbol on the frame in two places that look like a cityscape or something I have never seen before.

Thanks

The only way to know if the 19-2 has a special order "dull" finish is to obtain a factory letter. I believe the finish was originally bright blue, but I could be wrong. Whoever did the dull finish did a superior job.

Thanks Bill, understood on the letter, it's in the works, but as we know it's gonna be awhile!, in the meantime, I encourage wild speculation!

Well, thanks to a fellow forum member who had records on a shipment that included this gun, it turns out this was shipped to the Buffalo Police Department on September 19, 1966 with another 6" combat magnum and a bunch of other guns.

There is no indication of it having a special finish, so it was refinished for some reason from the info received, whoever did it was a master, I can't find any shiny bits anywhere!

It has no police markings and the action suggests it was never issued, mechanically it is like new.

Thanks to the forum once again for valuable info on another mystery gun.

I love this stuff!

Interesting Model 19. I can see a large law enforcement department ordering a handgun that normally has a polished finish with a matte finish. Matte finish is less expensive and when buying a large quantity, the savings will quickly add up to a substantial amount of saved funds.

With S&W back in the day anything was possible, special orders were common and they catered to Police Departments.
