Default 18 rounds - would you clean it?

a pretty simple question: i have a SW 65. i just fired 18 rounds through it at the range. i will probably fire it again on wednesday or thursday. before i shot it today, it was as clean as i know how to make a gun, which i think is pretty clean.

so would you break it down and do a complete clean, or wait? i have read that guns can be damaged by overcleaning. that's hard for me to imagine, but maybe it's so.

i ran a bore brush through the barrel a few times, and each cylinder. and put a drop of oil on the extractor rod.

what would you do?

Just swab the barrel/chambers with a bit of oil as well.

I would shoot it again and clean it no need for complete breakdown except once or twice a year but thats me . I take a rag or large patches to range to clean out behind the extractor. I'm having a heck of time now with Model 18 because previous owner never cleaned it . The forcing cone was leaded up and cases are sticking.

I'd wait until after you shoot it again in a few days, unless you carry it every day for defense.

I have a model 19 that sleeps under the seat of my pickup. I used it daily when I was guiding elk hunters. When not under the seat it is tied to a snowmobile, stuffed into a gear bag on a 4 wheeler, or strapped to my hip as I wandered through forests and steams. It was once bounced out of a 4 wheeler into a mud hole, then ran over. It has never been taken down and cleaned. When it was recovered from the mud hole it was during elk season and clients wait for nothing. I took it to town and used the car wash wand on it and taped it to the roof rack to dry it out on the trip back to the camp. As much of a hard life as mine has had, a friend is a lion guide. After 15 years rattling around country roads and strapped to him following his dogs over the Colorado mountains, his model 19 had zero bluing left and black tape completely covers the grips keeping what is left of the wood together. His model 19 never had so much as a rag run down the barrel. So from my experience cleaning is just a hobby for so many. That being said my pocket knives are spotless and my garage I use daily can be used as an operating room since it is so clean.

No. I'd just leave it. I usually shoot 100-150 rounds a week and clean every-other time.

When you hear "more guns have been damaged by cleaning" they really mean "more guns have been damaged by improper cleaning."

I often had range sessions that pushed 500 rounds of centerfire. If it didn't lead any, and nothing other than a few grains of powder were in the bbl I didn't clean it. I let the guns accuracy tell me if it needs more than a wipe down.

The most I’d do is wipe it down with a rag with a drop of oil on the rag.

Folks love to play with their guns. For lots of folks that means fussing about cleaning.

For some folks cleaning a gun has a Zen-like therapeutic value and I get that. If after a range trip, any gun that had 100 or more rounds put through it I would do a quick clean and then a light oil wipe down.

I have a 1973 Glenfield Model 60 that hasn't seen a bore brush more than a dozen times in its life. Don't over think it.

I assume I have real estate from several western states residing in the nooks and crannies. It took decades to acquire it and think I will just keep it. Thanks for the offer though. Not meaning any disrespect in any way but you sound like the type that washes his coffee cup after EACH use.

Seems to me that you are way over thinking this one. 18 rounds through a previously clean handgun, and you’re going to shoot it again in a week, it’s good to go. I’d wipe it down after the range and that’s all...!

For my regular use range handguns, I’ll clean them good every couple/few hundred rounds. Rimfire guns less frequently than that. High power rifles, more frequently.

For guns that I shoot then plan to store in the safe for a long time, I’ll clean the gun/bore good and make sure it’s got a good preservative in the barrel and exterior. I used to obsess about cleaning them all the time, then came to understanding that it just doesn’t have to be done that much...

zen-like therapeutic value: yes indeed. it just feels good. knowing those little bits of trouble are brushed away just plain feels good.

I would wait for several trips of that magnitude to pass before I would clean it.

On another forum, I replied
to the OP that I'm surprised
his Model 65 operated beyond
11.5 rounds.

To add here, some guys really
push their Smith & Wesson
revolvers.

Read where one guy, I think his
name is Jerry Miculek, is known
to have cleaned out the flutes of
a revolver with an empty .38
casing as a scraper. OK, it was
a stainless gun. True story?
Don't know but I like it.

Personally, I hate to clean guns of any kind. Revolvers, eh, depends on the ammo I've shot, anywhere from 100 to 500 rounds. I really don't keep track. I look it over and decide.
Semi-autos, I have bribed a friend to clean them. Gave him a fancy high dollar custom auto pocketknife. Free cleanings for life.

What does “break it down” mean to you? Sounds like you plan on going way past factory recommended cleaning. Just wipe it off and it will be fine…

Asked and answered.

Mark, no one here meant any disrespect. Folks answered you openly and offered good, sound advice and yes, we had a bit of good natured fun with it. However, if this is all it takes to raise your hackles then maybe some thicker bark is in order.

It's all good.👍

I clean my guns even after single a range session, even if it’s 1 magazine or cylinder full, even my Glocks. Just funny like that

Me too. I’ve never shot a gun and not cleaned it before putting it away. Then again, I’ve never planned to shoot the gun again within a matter of days. I haven’t shot some guns in years.

I would love to show pictures of some of my worn guns with neat histories. The reason there are no pictures as I am not skilled enough to take and post. I have scads of hunting and outdoors items I would like to sell on EBAY but it hasn't happened yet. I have a 94 Winchester made in 1936 that has no bluing left and once resided in Fairbanks, Alaska according to a slip of paper found under the but. I as well like honest were on tools, guns, knives etc.

I'd say you've already done it. I have put dozens of guns away dirty to clean later at some more opportune time. No damage has occurred. Now my brother never puts one away without cleaning it. I have seen his garage and his OCD does not carry over..

Most of my revolvers have never had the sideplate off nor the cylinder removed for cleaning. And they all look just fine, including those that are over 100 years old. An who knows how they were cared for.

Just some good natured fun from guys essentially saying that your gun will be fine until after the next couple of range trips.

One thing about revolvers
is that they really require
very little oil in the innards.

General maintenance merely
suggests a drop or two of
light oil such as Rem Oil into
the innards occasionally. The
oil will run and coat everything
needed. Colt for its new Pythons
supplies a sample of Lucas oil,
slightly thicker than Rem Oil.
The sample has 0.135 oz. of
oil, more than enough for the
Python.

I hate the word "lube" because
it suggests to me greasing
the insides. A revolver ain't
an auto, i.e. a 1911.

And look now to
the manual for Glocks where
a little dab of oil will do you.
Friction between parts is
minimal.

99 times out of 100 there is no need to break a revolver down past just pushing the cylinder release and opening the the crane.

As for cleaning. It depends on what was shot. Factory new ammo would just be a quick swab job. Something that's a lead reload would get cleaned.

I don't clean as religiously as I did in my younger days. I would not clean it until I had put a couple hundred rounds through it. Maybe even more as long as there was not much buildup.

If I shoot just a few rounds?

I run a dry bore brush through the barrel and chambers 5 or 6 times, then a bore mop with a very thin trace of Rem Oil.

Wipe the exterior surfaces with the same light Rem Oil including the cylinder face and inside the frame window / breach face. Check under the ejector star for any debris (sweep it out with a Q-Tip if necessary).

It takes well under 5 minutes. This way no lint bunnies accumulate or dirt from holster carry.

It’s a simple task that keeps my gun in top condition. I don’t remove the cyl crane or grip panels unless it’s gotten unusually filthy or wet. I use VERY LITTLE OIL on my guns - it’s a dust/dirt magnet.

A teardown is almost never necessary.
Maybe every couple thousand or so, maybe-maybe not.

Jerry Miculek says he only cleans his gun when they start to loose accuracy. And are often less accurate after cleaning till a few rounds go down range. I do run a bore snake through and wipe them off after shooting.

Carry a silicone cloth with
you to the range. After
several cylinders full of
shooting, wipe the outer
surfaces of the cylinder,
around the barrel, etc with
the silicone cloth. That
silicone keeps powder residue
from building up in the flutes,
face of the cylinder among
other points.

Most guns are over cleaned because some idjet pushed an aluminium cleaning rod down the barrel not being particular about keeping it away from the lands and grooves. Aluminium that you see on anything is actually aluminium oxide. One of the most abrasive substances known to man. Look at a bunch of old .22's that have been owned by some kid grown to manhood and if he has owned that gun over his life time it's likely had the lands and grooves worn away by an aluminium cleaning rod if cleaned from the muzzle. If cleaned from the breach then the forcing cone is likely extended well into the barrel. That is what is known as over cleaning.

Most likely such a gun is owned by the man whose father told him to clean it and keep it clean, but never really gave good advice as to what is a proper way to keep it clean. So the young fella cleans it once a week, or more often when new and later once every time it is shot, resulting in over cleaning. Gun is ruined but hey we can reline the barrel and give it another 60 years, when the truth is it only needed to be cleaned once a year unless it was dumped in a dirty mud puddle, run over by a four wheeler, then dragged through another 4 weeks of hunting season.

Full cleaning? No. Wipe it down and clean under the extractor? Yes. A more thorough cleaning when you will not be shooting it twice a week.

Overreact much?

You're right- there is no "cleaning section", but I'm pretty sure "gun cleaning" is a "gun topic". That's why I moved it to this gun forum.

My deer rifles just get wipe down after each hunt. The bore gets NOTHING and stays "seasoned" the entire 4 12 month deer season(SC Aug 15th to Jan 1st). Unless it gets wet. At the end of the season I'll give them a good cleaning before putting them to bed.

For some reason, probably from my childhood, I like my shotgun barrels shiny. They get a brush and a swab after every session. Rifles, revolvers, and semis get a wipedown and wait for a cold winter day to get the full service. Most of the time that takes all day.

so would you break it down and do a complete clean, or wait?
Exactly what are you breaking down? There is absolutely no need to "break down" anything to properly clean a revolver. No need to disassemble or even take out any screws.
I am aware that some people remove the cylinder for cleaning, but I consider that foolish. Its not necessary and puts un-needed wear on the screw. Do it often enough and the screw won't stay tight and will start coming loose during shooting.
I only "break down" a revolver when it shows signs of needing a full disassembly and having the innards scrubbed good. That might happen maybe once every 20 years?

As to the original question. If I know I'm going to shoot the gun again in the near future, No I won't bother cleaning it. Just a quick wipe down with a clean cloth.
However, if I know the gun will go into the safe for anywhere from several months to years before shooting it again, I get plumb anal about giving it a through scrubbing to the best of my ability.

I normally don't clean my guns until they stop working properly or are feeling obviously gummed up. 18 rounds you're just fine.

I enjoy shooting guns, not cleaning. That part is a chore for me

I just bought a new Les Baer Custom Carry. They recommend shooting 500 -1000 rounds through it before disassembling and cleaning.

Im at the 850 round mark, and the withdrawal symptoms are starting to subside.

Carry Glocks get cleaned thoroughly after shooting.

Range revolvers get a quick swipe after every range trip.

Range Glocks, etc don't get cleaned. My AR hasn't been cleaned in years. .22LR s get cleaned when they get sluggish.

If I’m shooting the revolver I’m carrying, I’ll clean under the extractor star, run a CHAMBER brush through the chambers, and run a bore snake through the barrel twice before loading it with my carry ammo. My practice ammo has been my LRN handloads but they’re about gone and I’m getting ready to load plated RNs which will be cleaner. My practice sessions are usually 50-100 rounds. More detailed cleaning takes place when I think of it.

For a range-only gun, it gets cleaned when it stops working or when I think about it, whichever comes first.

I have a M19 that I've carried around the homestead for several years and it gets the same loving care. It lives a harder life than my pocket gun because I carry it in a belt holster so it's more exposed to the elements. It really looks bad when the holster is full of saw dust and wood chips. Blow it off and it keeps on shooting. Larry
