Help with year almost new to me model 10 no dash

Been searching long for a model 10 and walked into my LGS Saturday and tucked in the corner of the used handguns found this model 10 no dash snubby.
There's a little bluing wear on the backstrap, other than that it's in nice shooting condition to me. Locks up tight, cycles smooth. The box is not correct but doesn't matter much to me.

Put it on layaway for now.

Early 60's?

Looks like '61-'62.

I recently picked up a very clean 1964 RB 2”. I never payed much attention to the model 10 until getting this one.

I've been looking for one to go along with my 4" model 13-2. The 2" barrel is not real common, and in RB configuration from what I have seen. watching a couple on GB and I paid less than what they are up to.

My Model 10 nd is s/n C470xxx; it shipped 9/59

My Model 10-1, s/n C507xxx shipped 6/61
My Model 10-2, s/n C578xxx shipped 11/62

Here’s a quick snap of the 1964 I picked up about a month ago. Excuse the modeling look in the finish. I shot the photo on my deck and the clouds reflected in it.

My friend and I believe it must have spent most of its life in a dresser drawer. It shows very little signs of being fired.

That's definitely a beauty!! When I get this one I'm going to polish it up to see how nice I can get it.

With the wear on the backstrap and grips I hope it served someone well in law enforcement. I might bite the bullet and send in to S&W to get a paper of authenticity.

I never thought of a model 10 as having that nice a finish. I always thought 10 was sort of a utilitarian firearm like the model 28 that I have. The finish on my 10 is comparable to my 1955 K22 which leads me to think that Smith just did a much better finishing job on all guns back in the day. The 27 was the one I always identified as having the luxury finish which it does.

10’s and snub nose become addictive. I’d like to find a 5” or 6” M10 in comparable condition and a model 36 2”. Right now though I’m keeping my eyes open for a very clean detectives special Colt. The model 10 and Detective Special were the popular arms used in the detective movies of my childhood.

From what I've researched the model 10's before they were actually called a model 10 and had no serial numbers were of a flat kind of parkerized finish.
I have a very nice model 13-2 dated 79' in 4" that carry's well in my Don Hume IWB leather. This model 10 will be a great backup in ankle or pocket holster.

Not true. S&W revolvers have always had serial numbers.

Glockwhiskey, a warm welcome to you, knowing you will gain much great information from this forum. Serial numbers have always been a feature.

You may be thinking of the time at and after the Gun Control Act of 1968, when no serial numbers could be repeated. Each arm had to have a distinctive SN.

Which later opened door to "modern" alphanumerics with, say, three letters plus numbers. (Of course, many earlier serial numbers in fact had had one letter as part of their serial number.)

So, many of us are still trying to learn each day and we welcome your participation! By the way, neat S&W in your post above @1!
