Default Model 38 - age and value question

Greetings,

I'm thinking of offering my Model 38 for trade. I acquired it 8 or 10 years back in a trade. I had a 1985 manufacture date in my head but looking under the stocks this morning, it looks like a 4/78 date stamped on the right side of the frame. Pic attached. It doesn't actually have the "/" so maybe it's some other random number.

I'd also appreciate anyone's opinion of value. Pics aren't the best but should do. Definitely shows use, no crack under the barrel and the lockup is passably tight but not "like a bank vault".

ETA: Yes, yes, the serial ... ANP15xx

The SCSW says 1986 for the ANP serial range. I see some blue wear, etc and would believe that your gun should bring $400. The numbers on the frame mean nothing outside the factory assembly crew.

There seems to be a disproportionate number of Model 38 Bodyguards on the market. Prices are all over the chart (many sellers are way too optimistic, and theirs aren't moving).

Based on nearby s/n's in my database, yours probably shipped in 1986.

Somewhere in the $500-$550 range might get a "sold" without a long delay.

There's an assembly number on the left side of the grip frame that matches the one on the yoke. But based on the 1986 manufactre date, the "478" is obviously just some random number they used for something.

Thanks

Luckily for me, the other party didn't care for the shrouded hammer...

I had one of those "what were you thinking?" moments, trading a metal S&W for a polymer 9mm???

I appreciate the help.
