Model 37 info and value?
Hello,
A coworker of mine has her father's old Model 37 Airweight and is looking to sell it. I'm not sure what the value is but I told her I was interested and would research when it was made and a what is fair value for both of us.
Her father hand engraved (not well) his SSN on the underside of the trigger guard and front strap, which I assume will affect it's value to any collectors.
Here's some pics, any info on it's history and value is much appreciated!

That's what I was wondering...I was considering offering $350 but didn't want to short them.
I'm assuming it was built before 1969? Curious as to build year.

What you show us of the Model 37 makes it appear as though it's in nice condition. Even with the SSAN etching I think it's value is more than $400.
In your 2nd photo, look at the flat spot on the frame (where the barrel penetrates the frame) above where the "MOD. 37" is located on the frame. Look for a crack there -- unfortunately it's not all that uncommon. A crack disqualifies the gun as a functional shooter. It's a paperweight, albeit a light one.
My Model 37 707084 shipped in March '69 so your friends is likely close.
S&W did not track manufacturing (build) dates, only ship dates, and the company didn't assemble or ship in serial number order.

Nah, show it all to punish him for doing that.

If I needed a good pocket gun, and in my opinion there is none better than a j-frame air weight, I would give $400 for that one. I would probably cut off the hammer spur. I think $400 is the right price on that one.

Thanks for the feedback guys, much appreciated!
I don't have any more pics yet, but going to check it out in person. It's from their family member who passed, they ended up with a few guns they didn't know what to do with. I'm helping them sell the others, so we are working out a deal on the 37.
I'll look for that crack, but even if it's just a paperweight, I'll buy it to just fondle occasionally! :P

I paid $325 within the last year for a slightly less good looking 37 with no "engraving." I'd say your $350 is right in the ballpark.
