At least the markings are in a spot that is normally hidden from view.

What's the serial number? Was it an Air Force gun? Was it shipped prior to the date 2-5-65?

“CAV 007 1965”… It makes me wonder if it was owned by a chopper pilot in Vietnam named Bond!

I’ve got a nice shooter grade model 14 with a previous owners SS# scratched in the same spot. It doesn’t bother me at all.

I remember looking at a pre-64 Winchester model 70 in .300 Win Mag that was advertised locally. The rifle was probably 98% and would have been a great find, except for a drivers license number scratched on the receiver, barrel, floorplate and bolt. That bothered me. At leases the numbers matched!

I’ve never scratched any numbers into a firearm but I did let a couple other guys scratch a few up. Two were sbr’s but this one isn’t.

“2-5-65” misses my birth date by ONE day! I was born February 6,1965.

Units of the 1st Cav showed up in strength in September, 1965. I checked my VHPA directory and several Bond's are listed who are still alive. Only one survivor went to Flight School early enough to have been in country when they first arrived. The numbers may have a different connotation. I'll have to think on this for a while.
