Default 27-2 Pawn Shop Find

I hit several pawns shops yesterday. When I walked in one the manager said "I bought one this morning that you're gonna like." He went in the back and brought out a 6" blued 27-2 with presentation grips. SN was N51XXX. Looked to be in excellent condition. The smudges in the photos look to be mostly fingerprints. He can't sell it for 14 days. I put my name and number on the tag. He'll call me before he put it out. It's going to be interesting to see how he prices it.

Looks like a good one! Hopefully the price will not be too far out of line.

My preference on the N-frame guns is standard hammer and trigger, which that one has. A big plus in my book!

I hope you get it!

Nice gun! That serial number (5 digit) puts it somewhere between 1969-72, which explains the narrow service trigger and hammer, which were changed to the .500" target hammer and trigger in 1975. I question whether those smooth presentation stocks are original, but they look damn good. I hope you get a good price on it, and don't wait on him to call you, keep you eye on that gun; it'll sell fast, IMO.

I go by there at least once a week so I'll be reminding him about it. I've bought at least a dozen there and he's given me some great deals in the past.

I dont quite understand why he could not give you a price at this time. I understand he cant transfer the gun, but at least sell it.

Try living in RI. A couple have guns, but never anything to write home about.

The last time I was in a pawn shop around here, they had something I was interested in. I said can I have a screwdriver to pull the grips. He said no. I said would you then? he said why? I said I want to see if they number to the gun. He said" assume they don't". i walked out

He's a businessman. OP may be a good friend of his, but the LGS owner wants to get pound price for such a gun, and he's probably looking around, seeing what the market for that one is like. he'll come up with a price, will most likely give OP first dibs, and if the price is too rich, there will be someone else out there who'll pay for it.

You guys and pawn shops are something else......

In all my decades of travel, I'll typically try and
look in at local pawn shops, and typically come up
with Zero.

All the decades of doing this and all it produced
was one Smith, and it wasn't in a case......

It was in the shop owners back pocket.

Six years ago I visited my local pawn shop and found a excellent Model 15-3 2" blue that had just been pawned. I asked what would be the price if it were not reclaimed and was given an a very good price given that there was no box and it did not ware the original grips. At that point I gave pawn shop owner a deposit and lucky that I did, because I was advised later that several other folks had wanted to buy that little beauty.

I had a similar episode like Pete in post 12 at a gun show.I was looking at a very used pre 27 ,blue, 8 3/8" barrel, way overpriced. I asked if the grips numbered to the gun. The reply was S&W never numbered the grips. I just moved along.
OP, I hope you get it, That's a nice one.

I went by yesterday and it's still there with my name on it. The 14th day ends up being Thanksgiving day and they are closed so I'll have to wait till Friday to get it. We briefly discussed the price. What do y'all think would be a fair price for it?

Default Just sold a few 27-2's

Having just sold 3 Model 27-2's on this Forum in the last 2 months I would venture that $800 to $900 would be a very good deal, $1,000 to $1,100 a fair price for both buyer & seller, $1,200 & up, you could probably do better.

I haven't been to Mississippi since putting up a power plant for MEAM in Yazoo City 25 years ago so don't really know how guns and pawn shops are in your area, but if like around here you just don't find any Model 27's in anybody's cases these days.

That's a beauty! In that condition, I'd be willing to bet it'll cost ya' north of a grand if the dealer knows anything about these vintage Smiths' scarcities and values...

This isn't the type place you usually think of when you visualize a pawn shop. He's probably the most knowledgeable dealer that I deal with. He normally researches the vintage guns thoroughly but I'm a repeat customer and he's treated me right in the past. I've bought quite a few there ranging from S&W's, Colt's, 1911's to Parker SxS's and a Winchester 73 SRC. He recently showed me four drillings and combination guns he was researching and appraising for a client.

The only Smith I ever bought at a pawn shop was this 19-4, vintage of May, 1980 about 20 years ago. It was in pretty decent shape for a reasonable price. Most times, when I check out a pawn shop, I come up with zilch.

If it is what you want and the price is reasonable I say go for it. You may not be able to find one in that condition at a better price later. I bought a blued 5" and probably overpaid for it, but its "The Gun" I wanted at the time, so I bought it. I am happy with my purchase and I already forgot about the excess cash spent.

Over the years I have probably bought as many guns at pawnshops as I have at LGS or gunshows. Not as many lately since the shops have discovered the internet and Gunbroker. Pawnshops are like Gunshows and the lotto, If you don't go or play you never win.

I buy 99% of mine in pawn shops. There are only two LGS that have used guns and most are priced crazy high. I usually visit 6-12 pawn shops a week according to where I'm traveling. The majority of the time I strike out but occasionally there is a gem. There is a local police supply store that sells police turn in guns and confiscated guns. I've bought over a dozen S&W's from them.

Earlier this year I sold 5 of my guns through a local pawn shop. All were in excellent condition with boxes etc accept for a mint condition 2" model 12-2 RB without the box. All sold quickly and the model 12 was the first to go. They are out there. Sometimes you get lucky.

I went to the pawn shop Friday morning and he had it waiting on me. Cleaned it up yesterday and took a few photos this morning. Sorry about the quality of the photos. I was playing with some different lighting and I'm not happy with them.

Other than the turn line the only noticeable mark is on the right side of the barrel at the muzzle.

I was happy with the price!

you would be shocked to see how many stolen items go through a pawn shop. Good luck on the buy, if it clears the 15 days your assured its clean, or the police didnt do their trace.

Nice gun - I haven't seen one in that price range for quite a while. I bet he doubled his money easy in that 14 days. Alot of folks have no idea what a gun like that might be worth. They inherit it from dad or grandpa and sell if for next to nothing.

You got a very nice revolver at a great price. The first 27 I bought years ago was a 6 incher that I used in PPC matches. The action is so smooth on that big N frame that once you start that cylinder moving, the gun just kind of takes over and finishes the shot. Sounds strange but you will find out for yourself. Since those PPC days, I have added a few more 27s and have a nice stable of them. Good luck with your 27.
